      Pair problem / used box

      Hi all,

I bought an amstrad box off ebay to get anytime+ as i have the old crappy thomson.

I rang up sky to get the box paired up to my card to be told they will not pair the card because the box is under contract with another customer....i have both the box and their old card because they no longer have sky. how does everyone else pair the card up when bought second hand becuase they must have the same issue that the box use to be someone else's.

so at the moment had to plug my old thomson back in and have a new box just sitting round.

      Thanks,
      Craig

Re: Pair problem / used box

Thomson owners are being offered free replacement as the box cannot be used for Anytime+. See this thread -
      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-a...-thompson.html

With their refusal to pair the card, I would assume that the box is still under contract with another user. Usually boxes are out of the 12 month contract so there is no problem.

Re: Pair problem / used box

Normally there is no problem with pairing an old Sky STB with a viewing card. The process is actually very simple and only requires a quick phone call with the Sky STB setup & the viewing card installed in the same room as you.

It appears that in this instance the previous owner had acquired the box less than 12 months ago, or it was tied to an account that the owner still uses.

One potential idea is that te STB could have been stolen (just plucking at potential straws here).

I'll just have to wait until this offer letter comes through the door for the free upgrade.

i will just have to see if i can send this box back. i got the original box and everything that came with it, have to see.

      Sorry about that.

What i would suggest is that you contact Sky now and find out if they can arrange for a new STB to be dispatched to you now.

I can't give you a definite answer, but sky have a 31 day cancellation policy. I would be tempted to wait until at lease May if I were you, but then some might say that you could get it resolved sooner.

This is an issue I mentioned in another topic regarding pairing Viewing Cards, we can no longer Re-Pair Viewing Cards to boxes which customers buy themselves.

Whilst what you are saying does appear to hold some truth in this thread, it does appear that under specific circumstances a STB may not be paired with a viewing card.

In this instance 'they will not pair the card because the box is under contract with another customer' comes across as a reasonable excuse.

This also stops naughty installation engineers and thieves from profiting through eBay. Neither will be able to make a quick cash return from selling something which was never theirs to begin with.

I don't think legitimate independent sellers are going to be happy with that. Are Sky actually saying if you don't buy the box from them, they will not activate it?
