Whether they actually bother checking I don't know but, to be on the safe side, I have simply programmed the number of my favourite Indian takeaway (which opens at 6pm) into my phone with a 1280 prefix and, as I always order more than 6 times in 3 months, that is enough chargeable calls to qualify. A couple of weeks before my quarterly bill is due, I check my 'Recent calls' online to ensure I have made the required 6 calls.

Hence, Caller Display costs me 33p per quarter (6 x 5p calls). I'm happy with that instead of 5.25!

This was posted over on the dvdforums concerning people getting charged for not making enough calls to make it count as 'free'

According to BT customer services, my calls were below the level at which Caller Display is free. (My call charges were 0.79 in quarter, but that was actually higher than the previous 4 quarters!)

Anyway, at my request, they have now cancelled the "free" service, and have agreed to refund the 16 Nov charge on my next bill.

It's not all bad news. I also got an unexpected credit of 0.88 for paper-free billing.

      Re: Caller Display

I signed up to Sky Talk in Sept 06 and Caller Display continued to work on my line. It suddenly stopped and I rang BT and was informed that I had to pay 5.25/Qtr which I agreed to. That was 2-weeks ago and caller display continued to be inactive. I rang BT yesterday to report the fault and was told that it had been activated and if it was not working then there is nothing they could do about it.

      Re: Caller Display

I had Caller Display when I was with BT. I switched to SKY talk and it still worked fine. Then I saw you can get Caller Display for free as part of BT Privacy, so enabled that feature and ever since I've had no Caller Display. BT says it is enabled on my line but it certainly doesn't work.

      BT Privacy: Welcome to BT

      Re: Caller Display

      Dial

1280 then the code for the area - STD code, then the telephone number.

      e.g. 1280 0207 000 0000

You must dial the area code even if you live in that area.

All digits should be dialled as soon as the dialling tone can be heard and you should not wait for any voice prompts.

If you dial the 1280 prefix as newbuilder advises, the call goes out on BT instead of your CPS provider - so the charge for that individual call will appear on your BT bill.

If you are billed by BT for your landline rental monthly, you'll need to make two such calls each month but, if you are billed quarterly, you will need to make six such calls each quarter.

You could make all calls the same week (or same day for that matter) - it's the number of chargeable calls within the relevant period which matters.
