Perhaps a compromise would be to activate Sky Shield but turn off Call screening.
This would still allow the blocking of unwanted calls that do show numbers, but let through the withheld and out of area types of call.
Hardly ideal, but it appears that the actual number has to be known before it can added to the Shield list, even if it normally shows withheld on caller display !
I don't think there's a system currently in place that can tell the difference between calls of the Unknown/withheld/out-of-area type.
If you have decent mobile phone coverage in your house, perhaps get a cheap pay-as-you go phone for receiving calls only and update your NHS/people contacts with that number as the contact number ?
Thanks for that i will take all that into consideration when i ring sky and activate sky shield because i have been getting a few unwanted calls lately and i am on that Telephone Preference Service thing waste of time.
I think i may do what you said about the mobile number.
Silly thing is we never use the house phone for calling out we only have it because you have to for the broadband.
      Thanks again for the advise.

I believe the TPS service is only voluntary for companies to join and cannot block International numbers.
Yes, The line rental cost is for the maintenance of the copper line, actual calls cost extra.
I understand that some ISP's can provide a wires-only service with no phone service. How this will work out with the BT/Openreach separation and Fibre-to-the-cabinet solutions remains to be seen.
There could be some interesting options in the near future. A Sky VOIP service perhaps ?

OK, so I tried to activate this but I just get the following message, which is odd because I'm definitely "on net" - been on Sky Talk and Broadband for years & our exchange is LLU'd.

Sky Talk Shield is not available at your address

Unfortunately your address is currently outside of Sky's Network area.

Sky Talk Shield is not available at your address

Unfortunately your address is currently outside of Sky's Network area.
It has been announced a bit early, based on internal training.

It's some point in June where it becomes available.

I'm usually good for dates on these things but I tend to tune-out lately when they don't affect me, must be getting old!

Sorry. Will check again and report back if I remember, maybe.

Re: New Sky Talk Shield says no to nuisance callers: First of its kind, free call screening ser

Well I've just tried to activate it this morning and it's still telling me I'm not in a Sky talk network area so it doesn't look like it's launched yet.

Edit - Just done an online chat with Sky and they have activated the service for me. It's all working here now for me. The agent thought the reason why I couldn't activate the service online was possibly because I have Sky Fibre?

I've added friends and family numbers to my Star list.

The system does work as I've just tested it by dialling home using my mobile (which is on my Star list) but I put 141 in front of the number to withhold it and Sky Talk Shield does intercept the call, asks the caller to leave their name and then enter a random number, the home phone then rings as normal.

It's only available to customers on SVBN.

If you're still on WLR3 service then it won't be available.
If you dial 150 and it connects you to BT customer services then you're on WLR3, if you get Sky customer services then you are on SVBN.

Oops, didn't read whole post but above is still true.

It doesn't work on withheld numbers, though.
