      Unwanted calls

for a while now we have been getting unwanted calls from numbers like

      01028
      02015
      02014
      01007
      02022

they all called today between 12;30pm and 8:15pm

these type of "numbers" ring a quite a lot of times every single day - we have caller display so the phone saves all the missed calls etc.

these are starting to get anoyying as they are getting worse (today was a good day with just 5 calls) almost every time if i answer which i do to ask them to take us off the list and not ring again the line is silent then goes dead. (its happened before where these type of numbers have rang in the middle of the night)

I take it most of the 5 digit number ones are the scams over seans about the virus on windows etc.

but we also get one for UK call centers who have "selected our street for 50% of a kitechen/windows/doors/garage etc" even though years ago i registerd on the TPS.

When we registered on the TPS we were with BT for line rental and calls, we switched to sky talk a few years ago and they seem to get worse - i tried doing the TPS again and it says our number is already registered .

Has anyone else had the same problem - does TPS reset if you change providers etc.

Its starting to get annoying now - at times i feel like disconnecting the house phone so the s***s cant get through - but we shouldnt have to do that, as it stops people who do ring us getting through.

Unfortunately TPS only covers sales calls. Just ask any of these callers what they are selling and I guarantee they will say the are not selling anything, they are simply making a marketing call or 'doing a survey in the area'. It is time TPS was expanded to include these nuisances too. I probably get 5-6 of these every day and many can't even speak English properly, but maintain they are speaking from a UK call centre.

      Re: Unwanted calls

I simply ignore calls like this. Anything that comes up as 'International', 'Out-of-area' or numbers that are are clearly faked callerID's and even 08 numbers. If it's important, they can leave a message. 99.5% of the time, no message is ever left!!

It's a bit like email SPAM, the more you respond to, the more you are likely to get.

      Re: Unwanted calls

You are correct, TPS does not prevent them all. I get annoying text messages on my mobile, despite the fact that it too is registered.

However you can report all of the calls and text messages and help put these purps inside. If you visit the TPS website, then they have links to specific sites to register complaints against the people who call or text you. This will help them to build up a database and when the fines get implemented.

It will also help them to pass the information on to the communication providers so that they can cut off any offenders based in the UK.

As for what you can do in the mean time, just make sure that every time you sign up to something, that you tick or untick the box so that you don't receive these calls or text messages.

Some useful tricks in the mean time: Say to the caller that you need to get hold of the "man / woman of the house as he / she deals with these matters". Check to see if they are still on the phone 10-15 minutes later.

      Re: Unwanted calls

If I remember correctly about 3 billion of these calls are made to domestic UK lines each year. It seems impossible to stop them even when registered with TPS. My remedy is to have caller ID set on my answer phone and numbers that aren't recognised ring a different tone - these I ignore unless call screening shows them to be important. Genuine callers leave messages, these annoyance calls don't.

The Regulator should recognise these calls are reducing the landline system to a level of 'almost unusable'. As a family we all now call each other on mobile phones (where we don't receive unwanted calls) so can answer the phone in relative comfort and confidence.

      Re: Unwanted calls

      Hey all !

This number 01923288995 is calling me at day and night !!!!!!! When I answer nobody speaks to me, when I call back there is just a silence. I google the number and it was reported here Who calls from 01923288995 Watford ? | Score phonenumber: 6 - 00441923288995 Tellows - legal advice available as a survey. But I find it very strange then, because nobody asks me anything, there is just always a silence. I have no idea how can I stop it and I am begging for help !!!!1

      Re: Unwanted calls

What handset do you have? On mine I can program it to reject certain numbers, if you have this it may be your best option. You need Caller display enabled. This is what it says in my manual -
      Incoming call barring (Caller
      ID subscribers only)
This feature allows the unit to reject calls
from specified phone numbers that you
do not want to answer such as junk calls.
When a call is received, the unit does not
ring while the caller is being identified. If
the phone number matches an entry in
the call barred list, the unit sends out a
busy tone to the caller, and then
      disconnects the call.
      Its a very useful feature

I have and use the same feature. I heartedly recommend it.

As soon as I receive a silent call, an enquiry from some payday loanshark co or debt recovery service, spam from my bank or service providers they all go on my barred list.

Over time they give up and I seldom get bothered by nuisance calls these days.
