      Referring to the letters never really caught on until mobile phones became popular.

      There was an exchange in London that has the '234' code.

      Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      Just googled old london exchange names and it seems there never was a 234 london exchange

      Must admit though I never knew the london exchange codes corresponded with the letters under the numbers.
      Always wonder what they are there for, have seen them in the US like 1-800-TAXICAB

      Ok, to answer this then...

      I used to think that it was Harrods who had the number, but it was actually Citibank.

      Apparently they paid a lot of money for it too.

      Of course it was all wasted when Ofcom allow BT to change all the numbers.

      It could be described as an iconic number so I guess if it had never been allocated, once computer control was introduced and it became technically possible to associate any line with any directory number it could have been sold in the same way that DVLA sell vehicle registration numbers.
