They'll leave you paying your house purchaser's phone bill

Having finally managed to sort out the completion date for a house move and exchange contracts with only 2 weeks to go I naively phoned Sky Customer Services expecting to be able to terminate my contract on all Sky services on the completion date.

I'd assumed that if you were leaving the house you'd be able to terminate on that date......... Not so.

OK so they still want 30/31 days notice but even though you have to accept that you have to pay for further month, they won't even shut down the phone line on your leaving date! Unless you transfer the line to your new address they will leave it live in your old house to be freely used at your expense by the new owner until the expiry of the one month notice period!

      Crazy or what?

      I

You could always cut the line outside when you leave, but that would be quite evil.

What I would do would be to put it in writing that any phone calls after the date that you move will not be paid by yourself since you have requested that the telephone services be terminated from that date.

If they refuse to disconnect it having been advised that you are moving out, then surely they cannot expect you to pay the bill.

I would also advise you to double check how you stand with the solicitors who are helping you to move. Hopefully they will know how you stand legally (the above advice is not based on known legal facts). If not, then they should be able to pass you on to someone who can advise.

Moving house is one hell of a stressful thing and it's situations like this that just dont help.

I don't have a problem with the 30 days notice from a payment point of view but they should be able to deactivate the line to prevent the new owner from taking advantage of it.

This must be a common problem, but i did do a bit of hunting and couldnt find anything.

Fortunately when i moved, I exchanged contracts 4 months before the completion date so i avoided a lot this stress.

Re: They'll leave you paying your house purchaser's phone bill

With less than 2 weeks to go and with the prospect of having to leave the line live I'm afraid I caved in and agreed to have the service transferred to the new address.

My Broadband is less than 3mb at my present address and the new house is 2 miles further from the exchange so it's not going to be ideal.

They did confirm though that you are not on a new contract when you move so it seems that after they have incurred the cost of transferring the line, I can then give them 30 days notice to terminate it. Crazy.

But give them their due, when I told them I wanted to terminate all my Sky services
TV/Phone/Broadband they offered me a 25% discount on the lot for the life of the contract.

Have you confirmed that your phone number is being transferred to the new address as when my niece moved they would not let her keep the number even though she was still on the same exchange?

They did tell me that I would have to have a new number and I wasn't particularly worried about that.

I did read somewhere today that they would have the facility to retain your existing number sometime in 2012

For future reference and anybody else reading this thread. If you are in a similar situation as the OP you can avoid being charged for any calls the new home owners/tenants make. All you have to do is tell Sky to change your spending limit on sky talk to 0.00 when you ring in to cancel or transfer.

If you had sky talk unlimited then fair enough they would be able to make some free calls but all calls to mobiles, toll numbers and international numbers will be blocked.

Did they charge you for transferring the service?

Well they haven't told me about any charges. If you read all the stuff, transferring your Sky services is supposed to be free of charge but it wouldn't surprise me if there's a catch somewhere. 3rd party charges by BT or something like that.
