      Strange telephone problem... please help!

      Hi everyone,

      I'm experiencing a strange issue with my Sky Talk landline. Let me explain.

      The phone rings, I pick it up and answer, but I can't hear anything and the caller can't hear me. I have a dial tone, and I can ring out, and when I do ring out I can hear the caller and the caller can hear me i.e. like normal. Also my broadband is stable and unaffected. Line is quiet.

      So I'm only having problems receiving calls after the phone rings. As a test, I tried ringing my landline from my mobile and though it makes my landline phone ring, I cannot hear the ring on my mobile - it's dead. And needless to say, when picked up I can't hear or be heard.

      This is very strange and I can't find any solutions on the net as I can't find any exact situations that are the same - there are similar problems but variations such as no ringing on the phone at all etc.

      Other than suggesting that you temporarily use the test socket and try a second telephone, I can't think of too much to do just now.

      If you can get it working in the test socket, then you have an internal wiring problem which you are responsible for fixing. You can get a local telecoms engineer out to do this work if you wish.

      If another telephone works, then sadly you need to replace the first one.

      If both of these fail, then you have a line fault between your home and the telephone exchange. Give Sky a call on 08442 414141.

      If you need them to call you back, ensure that they have your mobile number as well.

      Hmm, very strange - everything is back working normally again. I didn't even get a chance to move things around and experiment!

      I guess (and hope) it was just a random hiccup. Fingers crossed.

      Perhaps the system picked up an error and it was fixed.

      Hi Marvelman

      Funny that I had exactly the same problem myself last night. I'm in Yorkshire and with Talk Talk for my phone and as far as I know no problems have been reported on my exchange. I did fiddle around with the main socket and the phone but the bottom line is that it just seemed to clear itself.
