Phone number moved to another customer!

Just had a phone call from a in-law. On his way home he called his home phone line (sky line rental etc) and a person picked up the phone (not his wife, complete stranger) who said numerous people have phoned asking for the in-laws.

When my father-in-law got home his phone line and bb (all with sky) were dead! Is it possible his number has been transferred to a different house by mistake? Is this a common thing? My father-in-law is trying to contact sky to sort this problem out!!

Sounds like a crossed line. To confirm, is there a dial tone at all? If so, then call 17070 and confirm what number is returned. Note the number down, call Sky and they'll log it to Openreach.

Father-in-law has been told by Sky that there is a fault on the line and it will take upto 72 hours to sort!

As its a crossed line it still means the line is still going somewhere, hence when the agent ran a line test it came back as a pass. Standard procedure in this case is for the agent to escalate this to the customer solutions team for further analysis where it will almost certainly be assigned to Openreach to sort out. When a line test passes they are the ones who have to log this off to Openreach so the customer solutions team perform some further checks to make sure this is necessary (in some cases a line test passing could mean an internal fault with a phone or wiring). Of course in this case I'm sure it will be something Openreach need to deal with.
