Sky Talk hold-up in registration due to BT basic line?

      Hi.

I've signed up for pretty much the full sky package excluding phone line rental (that is still with bt). A few days before my sky dish was installed I got a letter from sky stating there had been a slight hold-up in sky talk registration. It states:

'BT has infomed us that your current service is not compatible with Sky Talk. It migbht be that your on BT's Basic Service or have Outbound Call Barring.

All you need to do is change to a compatible BT service, such as BT Unlimited Weekend Plan or request that Outbound Call Barring is removed from your line. We can then continue to process your Sky Talk application.'

The installation went through fine and Sky Broadband was activated on the said date. But I'd like to get Sky Talk as it makes your Broadband cheaper doesn't it?

Now we haven't got call barring on our line but my uncle (who owns the house and setup the line years ago) is pretty certain he downgraded to BT's basic line a quite a while ago.

Whats is the best course of action now to get Sky Talk up and running?

      Cheers.

You will have to revert to BTs standard rental, for which they will probably want you to sign a 12 or 18 month contract, which is no big deal. Many think that keeping BT rental is the best way at the moment. Funnily enough you can get BT broadband with BT Basic.

AFAIK you can still sign up for the Sky Talk calls package from the BT standard rental (confusingly called Unlimited Weekend), so you would get 5 a month off your broadband.

      Hi. Thanks for your replies.

So what do I need to do (or get my uncle to do) to get the ball rolling? How much extra will the BT line rental be If we upgrade to standard BT rental?

It wont cost extra, it will cost less. Bt Basic has a set figure for rental and a limited number of calls. If you are taking Sky Talk Calls, you will only pay the basic (with a small b) charge for rental.

You will have to call BT and tell them you want to change your package to rental only. They will probably try to talk you into taking a call package as well, but if you do, you will loose the 5 discount for having Sky Talk.
