But, depending on their calling plan, can be expensive for your callers.

I can't see that it's much more expensive than an answerphone, and in my experience much more reliable. I find it invaluable to leave my wife a message while she's on the phone.

It's a service that you can turn off if you choose.

Sorry, I thought I'd explained that.

The very fact that you can't avoid it if the person you're calling happens to be engaged on another call makes it more expensive (an answering machine would only cost money to talk to if the person you were calling was out).

If someone rings you and you are already talking to someone on the phone to leave a message or not leave a message you get charged correct I don`t know how much. But
say you left the message and they rang you back. So you have spent leaving a message say 12p and they rang you back and if you are a talker like me they have saved a lot of money. To be honest I thought 1571 was Free from Sky. But I will look in to it and let you know

      The great 1571 rip-off.

Those using BT may well have to pay 12p (from 1-4-09) to reach 1571 (if they don't have an inclusive calls package covering the time of their call) but I never pay more than 5p for a call of any duration) to a UK 01, 02 or 03 number (via 1899, 18185, 18866 or 1301). The other person calling me back would, therefore, 'save' me 5p.

Similarly, reaching 1571 never costs me more than 5p - but it's still an annoyingly unnecessary 5p because reaching an engaged tone would have cost me nothing.
