Do you have an alarm system? Many of these make 'health check' calls daily and keep trying unless they receive the correct expected acknowledgement.

In reality, the calls are rarely necessary but, as the alarm companies take a cut of (your) call charges, they're a 'nice little earner' (a hidden source of extra income) for them. There is, of course, no reason why a geographic number could not be used because the 08 number will be programmed to 'point at' such a number anyway!

Sky 'call home' numbers are freephone numbers but, of course, there are numerous other interactive applications on Sky which connect to the line.

What was the full number dialled?

What is attached to your telephone line? Is it just your router, telephone and sky box?

I read recently of someone having similar problems with an 0870 number and eventually realising the burglar alarm he had taken over with his house had a hard-wired connection to the telephone line behind a cupboard - and it had been trying to call home repeatedly.

It wasn't this one, but it's similar.
