Line rental back to BT..Will my number have to change..?

Quick question to all those who have changed back their line rental to BT to advantage of Sky's talk package..did you have to change your number if the line rental was with someone else..?
Reason I'm asking is I phoned BT to hand line rental back to them(Option1) from TalkTalk and they want to issue me with a new number as I have no products with them..I only though what a pain this would be for me after the call.
Can I insist on keeping my existing number or is this standard proceedure..?

      Thanks
      Peter

If the number was origanlly a BT number then ask for a "Return to Donor"

As far as I know you can port your number from one provider to another exactly as you can with mobile numbers or broadband. You need a PAC code (Porting Authority code I think its called) which BT should obtain from TalkTalk to transfer to your BT line. I have taken my number from BT to ntl:/Virgin Media and back again!

It may be if you have told BT you are opting for Sky Talk that they cannot be bothered with the procedure if they know they are only getting line rental. Nevertheless I am sure you can do it with a little persuasion!!
