BBC to end Formula 1 television contract early

BBC to end Formula 1 television contract early - BBC News
BBC Sport is to "reluctantly" end its Formula 1 television contract three years early as part of savings across the corporation.

Channel 4 will take on the BBC's F1 broadcast rights from next season.

"The current financial position of the BBC means some tough and unwanted choices have to be made," said Barbara Slater, the BBC's director of sport.

However, BBC Radio 5 live has extended its commentary rights for F1 until the 2021 season.

BBC Sport broadcast 10 live races of Briton Lewis Hamilton's world championship-winning season in 2015 with a one-hour build-up to each grand prix. It also offered extensive highlights of the nine other races.

But as part of a 150m gap in the corporation's finances from next year, BBC Sport was asked to deliver 35m of savings.

"A significant chunk of BBC Sport's savings target will be delivered through the immediate termination of our TV rights agreement for Formula 1," added Slater.

"Any decision to have to stop broadcasting a particular sport or sporting event is hugely disappointing and taken reluctantly.

"There are no easy solutions; all of the options available would be unpopular with audiences."

BBC Sport regained F1 rights from ITV in 2009 but - in another cost-saving move - had been sharing the broadcast rights with Sky Sports since the 2012 season.

"These are very challenging times for the BBC and sport is not immune to those financial pressures," added Slater.

Comment: Whilst I am sure that the BBC's F1 team will have known something of this for a little while, its a great shame for them. Hopefully some or all of them will be offered a suitable position with Channel 4 when it takes over in 2016.

How exciting, listening to a F1 race on the radio.

I certainly hope that DC and EJ get a place with Ch4, they are two of the best commentators on motor racing.

I wonder if we will see a licence fee reduction due to a lesser service ?

Never watch BBC F1 Myself as always watch on sky.
The little I have watched though of the BBC F1, David Coulthard and Ben Edwards (MR screechy) I have not been impressed with their commentary.
As Coulthard has a big financial stake in Whisper, who do the sport for C4, expect he will be part of their team.
Eddie Jordan is a pundit not a commentator and I dont rate him at all, just an old mans whinge.

Must be dull job now for that Barbara Slater, BBC director of sport. Suppose she will just turn up to the office a week before Wimbledon or the Oympics now.
Another nail in the coffin of the BBC, not that I care about it anymore.

Considering F1 only cost the BBC 20M, I don't think it will be long before they give up Wimbledon as well, which costs twice as much. Its sad really, when you consider Sky are paying nearly as much for one PL match.

On bright side, Ch4 have agreed to show the full races without commercial breaks. I had visions of Hamilton and Rosberg screaming wheel to wheel do the straight only to be cut to a Fairy Liquid advert just before the corner.

Yes, but the viewing figures for Wimbledon are a great deal higher than F1, therefore pence per viewer its cheaper. F1, to be honest is not as good to watch as it used to be.

Not sure that I agree. Wimbledon only runs for 2 weeks and last year drew 29 million viewers. The 10 F1 races spread over several months drew an average of 3.1m. So the viewing figures for F1 are actually higher than Wimbledon.

I think BBC probably think the F1 figures will decline, due to the dominance of Mercedes, just as they did a few years ago with the Schumacher/Ferrari dominance. Sky's F1 figures were down last your too, averaging only 657k per race, so many more watched on BBC than Sky.

I suspect there are also fees other broadcasters pay for material, live or recorded from Wimbledon that the beeb will get a percentage of. With F1 it all goes into Bernie's pocket.

      I think Bernie has enough.
