No NHL on TV in Europe for 2011-12 season?

      Hi,

For the last few years I have subscribed to ESPN, largely in order to watch NHL ice hockey on ESPN and ESPN America. (There is already plenty enough football and cricket for me on Sky Sports.) The new NHL season started a week ago, but ESPN is no longer showing NHL ice hockey.

In July Medge Consulting and AMI (Advisers Media International) acquired the international media rights for the NHL. Previously ESPN held the European franchise directly, I think, but now they may (or may not...) be negotiating with Medge/AMI.

There is a Facebook group on this: No NHL on TV in Europe for 2011-12 season.

The Paranoid Puck blog has also covered it: The NHL's European TV Mess.

On the ESPN America website ice hockey has been removed from the list of sports. In the TV schedules you can still search for ice hockey, and although there is none they do say, "Although we look forward to announcing more live fixtures very soon".

It is difficult for a mere customer to find out anything at all from ESPN. Meanwhile the ESPN subscription price is the same, you just don't get so much for it.

What is going on? Should I join the other ice hockey fans and simply cancel my ESPN subscription? Or wait just in case ESPN really is still negotiating?

If that is all you want it for, cancel. You can always take it up again if they do manage to negotiate a deal.

Re: No NHL on TV in Europe for 2011-12 season?

Premier Sports, which apparently broadcasts on Sky Channel 433, this afternoon announced it will broadcast NHL games, starting this Saturday. Subscription 7.99/month.

Good that the games will be broadcast after all; bad that it requires a separate package subscription (rather than being included in the Sky Sports or ESPN packages).
