      Sky Songs To Close?

      Just been given this information.

Unfortunately Sky Songs is to close. Although we've created what we believe to be a really innovative and good value digital music service, regrettably we've not been able to reach a large enough customer base in order for the service to continue.

If you are a subscriber, please be reassured that any tracks you have previously downloaded using the service remain yours to keep and are not affected by the service's closure. All existing customers will be able to continue to use the service until it closure on 7th February 2011.

Thank you to all subscribers for your custom and support. Please feel free to email us on skysongs@bskyb.com. We have also emailed you with more information.

I didnt even know that it existed, guess it was a case of poor marketing and there being other established providers out there.

      Re: Sky Songs To Close?

The thing is Sky must have done something so wrong for this to fail. There are so many other providers that are successful.

People always want music either legal or illegal, and iTunes is a good example of how to pay through the nose (imo - Sorry Mr Jobs it's my opinion)

Amazon do well, Spotify, and others as well. With 10 million subscribers, they could have wiped the floor with a lot of them.

I wonder if this is part of a bigger rationlisation of Sky's business with the closing of UKO as well as the music store I wonder if we shall see a lot of other of Skys ventures being closed down if they are not profitable.

I've never really understood these small ventures. Stick to your core business..... that's where the long term profit is. Instead of investing in these side ventures, invest in unbunding more exchanges (that'd bring more customers to Sky or aid retention).

      Re: Sky Songs To Close?

Elsewhere it's reported Sky Songs only attracted <10,000 subscribers (at 6.49/month). However as Sky core business is a 'content distributor' for TV then the same model should be applicable to Music. As NR says lots of people have made it work but Sky seem to have had zero profile as I also hadn't heard of the service until closure was announced.

It's a bit like SkyCast - Anyone remember that?

      Re: Sky Songs To Close?

I liked Sky Songs - I got 15 downloads a month and unlimited streaming of full music tracks for 8 per month. That's cheaper than most music download sites. I think Napster is 10 per month for 12 downloads.

I think Spotify is the way to go PC and Phone with an offline playlist.
