but would there be even a tiny possibility that any of these boxes might still be out in the wild, and, if so, what would be the best box to look for ?

I fully appreciate that it would probably be easier asking about finding a needle in a haystack full of needles, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask.

The reason I wouldn't mind picking one up is mainly for my mum who still uses that EPG on an ancient amstrad box and she gets on with it really well with her eyesight, but i'd love to get the 'HD' version for her as she has a HD television that she doesn't really get that much use out of as this sky box is attached via SCART.

Cheers nice Sky User forum folks

They are available on eBay, especially through certain stores there who are very good. They are obviously used but seem reasonably priced.

I would imagine any box with the old EPG would be a Pace, Samsung, Thomson or the older Amstrads. Any of the newer boxes with the old EPG would update as soon as they were connected. A few of these are still available on eBay.

Re: Early Version 5 EPG with Blue Theme and "HD" Option

Sadly the old SD boxes are drying up every day.

Sky recently pushed to get as many existing subscribers away from these old STBs, so there will be even fewer in use.

There are some issues for the older Sky+ HD STBs too. The Thomson STB is no longer suitable for Sky's transmissions. The other three (Pace, Samsung and Amstrad DRX780) each had an update to support some hidden changes. The EPG & feature set on them remained unchanged otherwise.

The Sky+ HD STB is going to continue to be supported. It will work with a Scart lead if that is what is available for the TV. Of course the text is a little smaller than the old SD STBs, but this is because more people now have a HD TV than before.

This bit really depends on a range of things, including budget and available space, but might it be worth thinking about getting her a 32" or 40" HD TV? Before getting it, let her see what it is like first. Specifically let her see the Sky+ HD EPG on one first, at a similar distance to her current setup. A good 32" TV can be bought for under 200, whilst a 40" can be purchased for under 300.

If your mum has a HD TV you can use a HD box and change the look of the menu and epg with the Accessibility Options. You can select a larger font and higher contrast to make things easier to see.
