Multiroom Record a prog on main box watch another room?

      Hi,
Please forgive our lack of understanding (probably an age thing We currently have a main HD box with RF out supplying Sky to three other rooms so that we can record a programme on the main box but watch it anywhere.
The disadvantage is the mass of cabling all over the outside wall.

We are due to move house soon and wondered about how Multiroom works - can we record a programme on the main box but still watch it in different rooms? Or does each room have its own box with completely separate and different recordings?

Thanks for making this a little easier to understand.

No sorry, each box is separate with it's own recordings unfortunately. This 'shared' recordings feature would be very useful IMHO.

I just physically swap my HD boxes round if I want to watch something recorded on one box but want to watch it on my other TV.

With the increasing range of content via the CUTV and OD sections, you might get lucky and be able to download the content to watch on the Multiscreen box.

As for cabling, it depends on whether or not you intend to feed Freeview to each room as technically the main aerial feed is all that should be required. Sure the best way would be to take it from the aerial to the main TV, via the Sky STB, but a feed could go to the loft where you have a suitable splitter. This then feeds any other room.

Personally I wouldn't go for the swapping of boxes though. The repeated unplugging and plugging in of the satellite cables would increase their likelihood to get damaged.

An alternative idea would be to get Video Sender for the Scart socket. These can provide another way to watch the content of the STB on the second TV.

Maplin have a selection, but do check other sources:

      Search scart sender | Maplin

Re: Multiroom Record a prog on main box watch another room?

Thanks for your help - appreciate your advice. Sky sent me a leaflet offering a SkyHD or Sky+HD box for multiroom and when I looked at the specs for the Sky HD box it has no recording facility. Am I right in thinking it just shows live Sky TV ? I cant see that being very useful really - what a pity the box couldnt somehow resend the stuff recorded on the main box.
      Thanks again,
      Max

Yes the SkyHD (DRX595) STB is only currently able to show Live Content. As there is no internal drive it can't record anything. There are always things in development and hopefully it will do more in the future but I don't know what or when.

Should you wish to record content then a Sky+ HD STB would be much better. You could ask for a Sky+ HD (or a 2TB version) to be installed or you could ask the engineer to install a twin feed when he/she installs the SkyHD STB. Once you have everything installed simply purchase a secondhand DRX890 from a local shop and use that.

If you ask nicely most engineers will fit the twin feed without any problems.

Re: Multiroom Record a prog on main box watch another room?

As you quite rightly state it just shows live Sky TV but there is a good online offer available to get half price multiroom (5.62/mth) for twelve months with a free Sky HD box and free install. This also entitles you to free Sky Go extra normally 5/mth which allows you to download programmes to computers, tablets and some games consoles to watch later. This allows your family to register up to four devices and watch live or recorded programmes on two of them at the same time.

The new boxes no longer have an rf output so to cable the signal to other rooms would require an IO adaptor or as Scubbie stated you could use a video sender.

I upgraded to multi room yesterday I wanted a recordable Sky+HD box like in front room that's normally 200 and 60 install but there's an offer on at moment and it's free box and install!!
