      Standard SKY+ HD Box?

A very nice lady at Sky has agreed to exchange, at no cost to me, my original Thompson HD box with a new Sky HD+ box as part of a multi-screen installation. My other HD box is the 1TB version without built in wifi. Having looked at the Sky site, I can find no technical details for the standard Sky HD+ box. Can anybody help;i.e., drive size etc? CS has confirmed that I will be able to record on both boxes and no phone connections are required.

As an aside, I have also noticed that my revised My SKY page is showing a tick against a 2TB box which is a little odd.

      Re: Standard SKY+ HD Box?

Technical details of the standard Sky+ HD box are as follows:

      Operating voltage: 230V AC; 50Hz
      Power consumption: 45W (max.) / LNB switching +13/+18VDC 275mA MAX/22kHz
      Weight: 4.1kg (packed)
      Dimensions: 346mm x 255mm x 73mm (inc. rubber feet and connectors)
UHF modulator: CCIR PAL System I; Ch. 21 to 69 (factory setting is 68)
Operating temp. range: +5C to +45C
Storage temp. range: -20C to +60C
Hard disk capacity: 500GB (250GB personal storage space)
      Connectors -
      MAINS INPUT: IEC 60320 2-pin
      DISH INPUT 1: female F-type 75 Ω (950-2150 MHz)
      DISH INPUT 2: female F-type 75 Ω (950-2150 MHz)
      TELEPHONE LINE: RJ11, V90
RS-232: DB-9 female, data communications equipment
      (DCE) / EIA/TIA-232-E ITU-T V.28 115.2 kbit/s (max.)
      AERIAL IN: IEC 60169-2 female
DIGITAL AUDIO OUT: OPTICAL and COAXIAL digital-audio sockets for 5.1 surround sound
AUDIO OUT (L and R): Phono sockets (RCA)
COMPOSITE VIDEO OUT: Phono sockets (RCA)
USB 2.0: (for future connectivity) front and rear connectors
SCART: SCART (composite video out; RGB out)
      ETHERNET: (for future connectivity) RJ45, IEEE802.3 10-BASE-T and 100BASE-TX
SATA: external HDD interface, SATA 1.0a

You will probably receive the suffix W box which is similar with the following exceptions:
      Wi-Fi connectivity
      I/O port
No internal UHF modulator or TV aerial connectors

The 2TB box has now replaced the 1TB in Sky's literature which probably accounts for the 2TB box being listed on your "My Sky" page.
Unfortunately it also means that you are not eligible for a discounted 2TB box.

Thank you. I was hoping for at least 1TB but some recording space is better than none at all.

Make sure you get a Sky+ HD box as the standard Sky HD box does not have a hard disk.

      Re: Standard SKY+ HD Box?

The engineer has just arrived and he is fitting a Sky HD+ box as I write. He will also fit a wifi connector to my 1TB box. Praise where it is due, Sky has done everything that it said it would do, and both CS and the Sky engineer could not have been more helpful or polite.

This has been picked up elsewhere and has been reported.

I am guessing that someone thought that all DRX895 STBs had a 2TB drive, when this isn't the case.

As for the phone connections, please keep an eye on your bill.

In the case of new installations performed by a Sky Engineer, they do now set it up so that you don't have to connect Multiscreen set ups to the telephone line. In the case of existing setups, you DO need to keep all the STBs connected to the telephone line.

If the engineer installs the new DRX890 or DRX890W for you, ask if he can change the settings on your other STB to stop it requiring a call back via the telephone line. Of course it will pay you to connect them both to the Internet as well.

Thanks Scubbie. The engineer has installed a 'W' box and produced a wifi connector for my old '1TB' box. No phone connections required. The Sky wifi connector is pretty hopeless. I have a max speed broadband connection and very good wifi around the house. I tried to watch IPlayer last night and the stream kept stopping. No problems whatsoever watching via the TV's IPlayer app.

      Re: Standard SKY+ HD Box?

      Good result!

If you have the Mini WiFi connector on the 1TB box, you can swap out the lead for a longer one and place it in a better position if it helps.

The lead is a standard USB to to Micro USB lead that many phone use. If you don't have a single cable to hand, test it with a USB extension lead first.

I have the Mini WiFi connector plugged into my DRX890. Admittedly mine isn't too far from the router compared to what many out there will have, but the is a plaster wall between them. It has performed alright to date.

Do note that you actually need to power off the STB when plugging in the adaptor, even when swapping the cable over.

There is a signal indicator to help you on the network page ( <Services> 0 5 ).

Just as an aside, that Specification list is out of date. The latest model has NO Aerial input and NO RF modulator (= no RF output). Instead, it has an IO-Link port. More info.:-

I did state that in my original reply,

though thank you for the link.
