      Unresponsive DRX895 1TB

      Hi,
for the past couple of days we have started having issues with our Sky anytime + HD box (Amstrad DRX895 1TB) After a message indicating that two programmes were scheduled to record at the same time and having cancelled one, the box has become intermitantly unresponsive with symptons such as channels taking significant periods of time to change (1min!) getting stuck on epg, banner stuck, failed recordings. Generally buggy!
I have gone through the main processes of planner rebuild, software update system restore several times but none of these seem to resolve the issue. It works well but only for short periods of time and then the symptons reappear... It feels like a hardware issue, is this likely to be the case? If so extremely dissappointed as the box is ony 16 months old. Anyone else had a silimilar experience? I had seen somewhere that these boxes may have a high failure rate?
      Any advice appriciated!!

Perhaps Ken will pop in to give a better response, but could you confirm what the satellite signal strength & quality is like for both LNB inputs?

      Hi,
was just looking at the signal strength! Both sit at about two thirds strength and quality for 1st is about 90%, second 75%?

      That appears to be fine.

Have you powered off the STB by disconnecting the mains for at least 30 seconds before powering it up again? If this doesn't work, I'll keep quiet and allow someone with more knowledge to chip in.

      Hi,
thanks for the replies. I have tried powering off and disconected everything for about 15 mins but this didn't seems to help. I will try all of the processes again as it is frustrating, it seemed to occur all of a sudden and a box under two years old should not be expected to keel over! Was wondering if there was an issue with power supply, board, or hard drive....

      Re: Unresponsive DRX895 1TB

There's no way of telling what's gone wrong with some of these boxes, especially with different models ( DRX895-C, -R, and Z's, and also software versions flying around. You are not alone. There are posts aplenty about virtually all of these problems on the Sky Help Forum, and nobody seems to know why. The finger of suspicion points at software, as it has done ever since Darwin was rolled out.

As for hardware, these kind of performance issues have not been nailed down to one particular model - C, R, or Z, and as they are made in different countries, theoretically to the same specs, only Sky know which models are coming up short. Joe Public will never be told, just as Sky never admitted the capacitor fault on Thomsons. Although these 895's have no known hardware fault at present ( unless Sky know better ), I suppose we can't discount some kind of internal fault having developed over the last 16 months. The plain fact is that nobody really knows.

Most of them work perfectly well, unfortunately the reason for these sudden performance issues remains unclear.

The usual steps ( in order ):

Improve ventilation ( don't stack in a rack, cupboard or cabinet )
Test without any attached devices for a while - especially RF2, splitter, booster etc
      Test with Scart only
      Software Update
      Planner Rebuild
      Full System Reset
      Manual Reformat if preferred

Sorry for the generalisations, we're all in the dark on this one currently

      Re: Unresponsive DRX895 1TB

      Hi Ken,
thanks for the reply. In a strange way glad to know I am not alone! My box is a DRX895-C (China?) but as you say it seems that these symptons are very difficult to pin down although from what I can see not uncommon...
The reason I wonder if it is hardware related is the sudden onset of the issues, perhaps if it was purley software even more users would be in the same boat. I am reminded of historical problems were the name Amstrad was used in conjunction with hard drives!
I have requested Sky send out an engineer free of charge as the Sales of Goods act means I should be able to expect a product that is fit for purpose and has reasonable durability... Ironically I also recieved an offer from thier major competitor yesterday which I may have to seriously consider as I can see from various forums that some subscribers are left with these problems for many many months? Not worth paying nearly 100 a month for a problematic service/product!!
      Thanks again for your advice...

      Regards Daran

If Sky are unwilling to resolve the issue cheaply, then perhaps another way would be to cancel everything in your name, then get your partner to set up a new account in their name.

This would allow you to benefit from any new offers. Do check your options first.

Also VM is not the same. Whilst they provide many of the same subscription channels, there are some which are not present and many areas have issues with their broadband being over-subscribed. Check with any neighbours how their service behaves.

Something that I might consider would be to see if swapping the HD for another might cure the problem. Since the STB is over a year old, you would not invalidate the warranty, but if you happen to have a suitable 1.5 or 2TB drive lying around, give it a try.

If you cancelled the whole thing. Is there a waiting period on your property before you can resubmit an order for sky ?

      Re: Unresponsive DRX895 1TB

You have to provide Sky with a 30 day notice.

The Telephone and Broadband may be an issue as it could take two or three weeks before the line is clear for a new order to be placed on it.

It really depends what the OP wants to do.

Another option is to look on eBay for a 2nd hand STB.
