Question about Premier League Sky coverage

Hi there, just a question to satisfy my curiosity that someone may be able to answer.

I notice that a news item has reappeared, recently, of a woman in London who has a satellite system in the pub she owns, able to screen ALL Premier League matches. She uses a Greek satellite provider to achieve this.

Naïve question is how is this accomplished? It suggests that Sky televise ALL premier league matches, but only choose to broadcast a selection of them on any given Saturday.

Today’s match (Feb 25th between Chelsea and Bolton is an example of this policy.
Has anyone got any ideas? There is probably a simple explanation.

Apologies for relocating you, Scubbie, and thanks for the link.

However I still don't understand how a Bolton fan (and I presume there are some) might see the Chelsea match via the method employed for the Southsea pub?

Re: Question about Premier League Sky coverage

The Premiership has been selling the rights to air their football matches to various stations across Europe, with the intent of allowing them exclusive rights to show the content in their respective countries only. In the days before Satellite TV, this was really easy and you couldn't receive UK TV in Spain or Germany, but now you can.

This court case shows that this practise is against European legislation since Europe is supposed to be an single market.

If you were to subscribe to Sky, then there is no reason that you could not now live in Germany and watch the content with Sky in full knowledge of what you are doing. However this requires Sky to change their policy and revisit many of their contracts with their suppliers.

Re: Question about Premier League Sky coverage

So does this mean that Sky will cover (as opposed to transmit) ALL Premier League matches on any given Saturday?

From your reply it implies that the answer to my original question is YES.

Re: Question about Premier League Sky coverage

Other channels do broadcast Premier League matches in the UK.

As for covering all the matches, they have an agreed formulae to air matches. Not all are shown in the UK, but they certainly have access to footage so that they can show any significant events, as do the BBC, ITV, Ch4 & Ch5.

They don't. Saturday 3pm kickoffs are specifically excluded from the live broadcast packages offered at auction every 3 years by the Premier League to UK broadcasters. These 3pm kickoffs are syndicated around the world. They are not for live broadcast within UK. The aim is to protect gate attendance on the busiest day of the week for football..

      EDIT: See http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/f...televised.html
