Remotes Not Working Properly & Recording LEDS flickering on Amstrad DRX280

      Hi all,

Ive had the same Amstrad DRX280 Sky plus box for a good few years now and to be honest its been fine, apart from doing the odd wall reset. However, the remote stopped working downstairs (magic eye setup) so went upstairs, killed the power at the wall socket but this didnt fix it. Ive opened the box up and tried to run the box with the hard drive data lead disconnected, but this made no difference.

After a bit more testing the remotes work intermittently (red remote light on front of the box illuminates every 5th or 6th press) and then the box tells me the batteries are flat (they are not)

The box operates perfectly if you use the buttons on the front panel, and even still records & pauses live tv, but the LEDS / lights for record/ pause/ playback etc are now flickering, so somethings up.

I havent renewed my contract with sky for ages so could probably blag a new box for cheap from sky, but I've had just bought a very flash Panasonic viera with freeview HD and the ability to plug a hard drive into it to record, so am not sure how much longer I'm going to keep sky.

Any ideas on what the issue is with the box? can it be easily fixed or should I just bin it?

also doesnt seem to want to do a forced software update, had my finger on the backup button for 3 minutes, it just stayed in standby.

Open up the box and have a look for bulging capacitors on the PSU. Flickering lights are a bad sign. And you also can't do a software update, so I'd suspect a failing PSU.

Doesn't look good. Maybe 'flashed'. I'm no expert on these things. One of the slightly smaller caps ( one of two- in a pair ) looks as if it's bulging at the top. Maybe it's just the picture.

Oh well. No bulging doesn't necessarily mean the caps are OK, it's just that they haven't reached the final stage of failure.

Flickering lights not a good sign, so I'd probably still go with the PSU as suspect. See what others have to say.
