      Engineer calling today... help.

So I been having a few problems with my Sky HD box and phoned sky to cancel my subscription, was gonna try Freesat, but they persuaded me to stay by saying they will send a sky engineer out free of charge to take a look at my HD box today.

It is one of the chunky older Thompson boxes (can't find the model number) and the problems I have been having are:

      Failed recordings.
      No signal being received.
Picture freezes then box makes a noise and shuts down into standby.

These occur every so often which is very annoying and usually results in me switching off at the wall for 10 mins or so and switching back on. Went to settings and signal strength and everything looks fine there, checked wires into back of box and all fine there too.

My question is, what are the chances of me getting a new HD box from the engineer, will he connect anything to the box to diagnose it and see where the fault is? Haven't had any problems in the past few days with the box which is typical when you have someone coming out to look at it.

And if he did replace it would he take my old box away, which I don't really want as I have quiet a few things in it that I haven't watched yet.

Is there anything I can say to him to nudge him into the direction of giving me a new HD box?

Initially those symptoms sound like a PSU failure.

Earlier this year Sky were replacing the Thomson Sky+ HD STB for free as it will no longer be supported for any firmware updates.

Hopefully the Sky Engineer will leave you a nice new STB in it's place.

Unfortunately all your recordings will be lost. However in practise once the PSU starts to fail, it can also damage the Hard Drive, so they won't be much use to anyone if this is the case.

The Engineer may also replace your LNB as sometimes this can be damaged by the PSU failure as well.

Well that sounds good to me, lets hope he does replace it, fingers crossed.

Is there any way I can transfer my recordings to my PC then over to the new box somehow?
I know you can do that when replacing the HDD in a box, but I would probably be voiding the warranty on the new box yes?

Unfortunately the Thomson is pre-Darwin and the new STB will be post-Darwin.

There is some software available to copy off the pre-darwin contents.

Download Copy+, the free Sky & XTV disk copier software

Unfortunately the new software, which handles Darwin, doesn't allow you to copy from pre-Darwin.

Ok Scubbie, thanks for the help and info

This is strange but about 3 minutes ago my sky box just froze and shut down into standby, at least I can tell the engineer about that when he comes out.

      Re: Engineer calling today... help.

Unfortunately a service replacement is just that.

There are kits to repair the PSUs for the Thomson STBs, but you are now able to connect your replacement one to the Internet any sign up for Anytime+ since (having checked your exchange) you should be on Sky BB Unlimited.

As mentioned earlier, the LNB & hard drive could have been damaged too, so what you have now is a good resolution.

Hopefully Sky will add the different players (BBC, ITV, Ch4 & Ch5) at some stage, which will mean even more choice.

You may wish to think about installing a larger drive than the 500GB installed (you can use 250GB) at some stage. You have a 90 day warranty. The STB can take a 1TB, 1.5TB or 2TB PVR drive.

      Re: Engineer calling today... help.

Damage to the Hard Drive is extremely rare and generally occurs only if obvious PSU symptoms have been ignored for a long time. Even where "damage" does occur, it is usually limited to a simple corruption of the data.

Damage to the LNB is unlikely as the PSU capacitors would explode and other internal components would die before the voltage rose high enough to damage the LNB.

If you want to keep your recordings, transfer them before you call out a Sky Installer or make sure you have a different second-hand Digibox connected before he arrives!
