      They will trot out the same old party line when you phone them. As they did when the Thomson boxes started playing up with the infamous and well-documented PSU problem, with the tops of some capacitors starting to bulge and looking like Mr Magoo's eyeballs.

      They have never publically accepted the glaringly obvious defect on the Thomsons, and if the Amstrads are to go the same way, Sky will do the same thing - give you the runaround with the usual software update, 'No Satellite Signal' and full system reset procedures, eventually wanting 65 for a Service Call if the box is out of warranty.

      Having said that, it's still relatively early days yet with these boxes, so we'll just have to wait and see.

      In the meantime, I suggest you give your box plenty of space for ventilation. Stacking in a rack is not recommended. The Thomson HD boxes have two fans whereas the new Amstrads only have one.

      The scorched card ( or 'discoloured', as Sky call it ) is well known. Sky won't do anything about it until you tell them there's a hole where the chip should be and there's currently two-way HGV traffic passing through it from the street outside.

      If your card is burnt you can log it here:

      If you report it to Sky they will send a replacement BUT they will instantly disable your burnt card and you'll be without Sky until the new one arrives. Bear this in mind when deciding what to do.
