Yesterday I had trouble switching from one channel to another on my new sky+box so I took the plug out that controls the box for about a min and all was well when the box was connected is this the right way to go about this problem,and how often does this happen.

It shouldn't happen at all.
Reseting your Sky+ STB was probably a good move though.
Keep an eye on things and report back if it happens again.
If it does, could you describe your set up a little as well, for example do you have your own dish or do you have a communal dish?
