Hi all planning to get a new pc and thinking of getting a multi monitor setup so I thought occurred to me can I not get some kind of TV tuner and plug my Sky DVR box into the pc and run it though windows media centre rather than a stand alone TV?

I went for the slingbox route.

Slingbox.com - Watch Your TV Anywhere

It's a unit that sits next to your sky box (and/or bluray etc) and also hooks up to your network. It then enables you to view and control the box on any PC you choose (whether in your internal network or anywhere on the internet.... as long as the PC/laptop/mobile has the slingbox software).

If you can get a feed from your dish (or an aerial feed) to where the PC is, you can put a DVB-S2 card in the PC and get a bunch of channels (including BBC1HD, BBCHD, ITVHD, C4HD) or a DVB-T2 card for Freeview channels. I run a Hauppauge Nova-T500 dual Freeview tuner and a TBS 6920 single DVB-S2 tuner in my (ageing) media centre PC.

You can get all of the sky channels this way too, with a load of messing about - AVForums has a lot of info on this, and there is some discussion on Windows Experts Community and on TheGreenButton

You can fit a capture card to your PC to allow you to watch and record Sky. Just make sure it can handle analogue and is compatible with your OS.
