Sky+ box is dead, should I upgrade or replace?

      Hi all,

Out of contract with sky now and one of my sky+ boxes has died on me. We have multiroom with two pace sky+ boxes. Booting with backup held or left+right navigation buttons does nothing and the power light is flickering really quick, so I'm now planning on giving it a decent burial.

If you were in my position, would you upgrade and get a new HD box from sky (with their 3 month free offer), buy a 2nd hand unit or can Sky be pushed for a deal now that we are out of contract?

We have entertainment pack + sports + multiroom, broadband is cable.

      Thanks!

Depends if you want to get tied back into another 12 months. Push them for a deal. Otherwise cancel and get your other half to sign up as a new customer!

Me personally, I'm not a huge fan of being tied in, with no benefits for loyalty. For this same reason I buy mobile phones outright and get a reduction on my bill for not having a subsidised handset!

Check your MySky account on-line. This may let you know how much a new STB will cost you.

Also you may want to investigate how much it will cost for a Sky Engineer to attempt to 'fix' the old STB. It might be that they no longer have any Sky+ STBs and replace it with a Sky+ HD STB.

There is a few issues that you need to be aware of:

      • Anytime content is almost exclusively HD quality. This means that if you don't pay the HD subs, the you can't watch it.
      • You won't be able to copy any recorded material from the Sky+ STB to the Sky+ HD STB using Copy+ as the new STB will have the Darwin file system.

With regards to Anytime, there is an exception at present. If you have both movie packs then you can watch HD movies on Anytime. The same applies to the Sports channels I believe.

Apparently they have loads of "classic" Sky+ boxes left in the depots.

When I got mine swapped a few months back the engineer said they had loads and loads.

It depends on what the OP wants, anytime on the old Sky+ boxes are all still in standrad def which is great if you don't have a HD TV.

If you were thinking on moving up to or already have a HDTV then getting a HD box may be the way to go.

Re: Sky+ box is dead, should I upgrade or replace?

Thank you for replying, called sky and my options with them are:

      1) Pay 65 for a technician to repair / replace

      2) Take out a maintenance package at just over 8 per month (can't remember exact cost) and get both boxes covered, including repair of the one I have

      3) Upgrade to HD @ 10.25 extra and get a free box

Other than that, I could buy a second hand box off fleabay and swap.

I will think it over for a couple of days. Not really interested in their maintenance package as it would be cheaper to go HD. A second hand unit is a risk too.

I forgot to ask them what the warranty period is on an engineer repaired box and what connectors are on the HD box. My HD TV is an old one which only has one HD input (DVI).

I would need component connectors, as I am using a component switch and component to DVI cable so that I can have Xbox 360 and PS3 also connected.

I am pretty sure that it is 90 days.

I don't think that you will not get HD pictures from the Sky+ HD STB using the component connection with the Amstrad DRX890 & DRX895.

Just called them again, repaired box is only covered for 90 days, so just as risky as buying a second hand box really...

The person I spoke to had to go away and check whether there are component connectors on the box and said that there are. Mind you, she also said "component is for surround sound isn't it?" after checking...which doesn't fill me with confidence!

      Thanks again :-)

      I have the Amstrad DRX890.

For full 5.1 surround sound you need to use the optical lead.

It is not currently supported through the HDMI lead or the stereo DIN connection.

Even if the box has component out, I 'd expect it to be disabled when you view any HDCP copy protected programmes. You should check that your TV is HDCP compliant.

You stated that you have a "Sky+" Digibox. Only the Thomson Sky HD DSi8215 has "component" video outputs and Sky no longer supply this model, even as "refurbished". So your only option is to replace it with this model, or (if you already have a DSi8215) to get it repaired.
