      Sky box keeps losing signal

      Hi,

we recently upgraded our Sky+ box to a Sky HD box. We already had multiroom set-up so we moved the old main Sky+ box upstairs, however since doing so the box keeps losing signal on a regular basis (usually when I switch it on after it has been on standby for a while) - a message on screen says to switch off the box from the mains for 5 minutes and switch back on, after which it works fine for another day or so before happening again. The signal strength bar shows as almost perfect (shows empty when the message appears). This is getting rather annoying as it won't record anything once the message appears until you reboot the box.

Does anybody have any suggestions what could be the problem? Signal on the new box downstairs is good - that does not lose signal. Also the multi-room box has always had a good signal and never had this problem with the box before either.

Re: Sky box keeps losing signal

There's a possibility that the 'perfect' signal strength is overloading the receiver since moving it upstairs, and nearer (?) the dish. Not a frequent occurence, TBH, but it can happen on certain receivers, according to a few scattered reports on problems with a 'perfect signal'. It's just a thought.

What was the signal strength on the box when it was downstairs? Perfect, or around 80-90%. A signal attenuator may be required to reduce the Signal Strength. You could contact your local satellite company, or contact Satcure for advice on attenuators, or wait for the resident technicians here to comment, lol.

Check your Dish Inputs: switch off the box at the mains and double check the cable F-connectors. Make sure there is around 3mm of centre core visible in the F-connector on each cable, otherwise the connection to the box will be faulty. Carefully reconnect the cables. Switch on again at the mains, wait 3 minutes or so, and see if that helps.

I can't see anything to suggest a dish/LNB problem, especially as your other digibox didn't have any problems.

Sounds like the usual Thomson Sky Digibox fault.
