      Sky+ box won't start :(

      Hi,
I tried to change channel on our thomson dsi 8210cs Sky+ box earlier on this evening, and channel banner froze, but the displayed chanel continued to play, but I could not change anything!
None of the buttons on the remote or the box have any effect.
I removed the power from the box and left it for about 15 minutes, and then powered back up again.
The I can hear the HDD and the fan start up, but the power light remains red, and won't go green

Has any one got any ideas?

      Thanks in advance.

Bad time for the box to go kaput

You could try unplugging the box, then disconnecting the Dish Inputs at the back of the box for 10 minutes or so, then reconnect the inputs and try booting up again.

As your Thomson has the same Power Supply Unit ( PSU ) as the Thomson HD box that is notorious for capacitor failure with identical symptoms after 2-3 years in use, It may be that one or more caps have failed and are causing the box not to come out of standby. The hard drive seems to want to fire up, but is not getting the power it needs. You could open up the box and have a look for leaking/bulging capacitors. The top of the caps should be flat, not "slightly domed", and it should be dry, with nothing "oozing" out.

If the PSU looks OK, it's often useful to do a full reformat using the L/R navigation buttons on the digibox, then a forced software update using the backup button on the box. But these depend on the PSU working, and if you are in any doubt, don't bother. Just phone Sky, or use another box if you have one.

Also the PSU could be on the way out with barely noticeable problems with the capacitor.

When my HD box was done the electrcal engineer who changed the capacitors said that there was a problem but he could hardly see the capacitors were dodgy.

Give the box a couple of hours to cool down and put it somewhere well ventilated and try what Keredin suggested.

Thanks guys, it's come back to life now!
I recall we had a similar issue around a year ago. I couldn't not remember how we fixed it last time......
