Sky TV works fine during day, evening = dead

This is a little strange my friends.

During the day from approx 10am till 13:00 we have the TV on for the little one before she goes to nursery then it goes back ON at about 16:00 when the older kids get in.

I tried watching Most Haunted Live last week and Wednesday it packed in at about 23:00(ish) came up all blocky and broken picture then NO SIGNAL Thursday was approx 20:00 = NO SIGNAL and every night including now as I type this we get NO SIGNAL starting at random times, I understand that this may be caused by the weather but something must be able to get sorted out!

My sister lives approx 15 mins away from me and hers is fine every night.

I live near the O2 arena in Greenwich S.E if that helps, maybe someone else in my area may have had problems?

I do NOT have anything obstructing the line of the sat i.e tree's.
It has been fine for 2 years apart from last week when it started
I have removed the viewing card, removed power for 5 mins, plugged it all back in etc etc etc = still the same!

This sort of problem is associated with people living in Southern Spain! It's because their signal is very weak and they have blank viewing times for some channels. Whilst you are in the UK it maybe suggests either your dish has moved a little or your LNB is failing. Can you swop your Sky box with your Sister (or at least try yours on her set up in the evening) to eliminate the box as the source of the problem?

Some car alarms also interfere with Sky reception. Does your dish point in the direction of a road or car park ? There could be a vehicle parked nearby at night which is interfering.

Neighbours' external wireless alarms do this too. More from Satcure:

Neighbour using a wireless remote extender the same as your own
      Thermostat causing interference
Neighbour with "Snooper" type radar device in car
Street light of the mercury or high-pressure sodium type
      Energy-saver or fluorescent light
      Dimmer switch
Microwave transmitters used by local company
      Mobile telephone
      Portable "DECT" home telephone
      Computer wireless LAN system
      Microwave oven
Coaxial cables too close to mains wiring or similar

True, but you can rule quite a lot of those out if the problem happens only at night.

Agreed. It's just a general list for anyone else reading with intermittent signal problems.

Old_nick is right guys, I didn't know myself that all of them could cause the problem but as nick says, it's only hapening at random night times, sometimes just gone 19:00, at 23:30(ish) as I am typing this now (13:00) I am watching Sky News (501) and it's all starting to play up again but has been working fine for about 2 hours, daughter is home sick so she has Disney etc on, all Sky keep saying is it's down the the weather.

Re: Sky TV works fine during day, evening = dead

Unfortunately, signal problems are notoriously hard to trace without a full inspection of your setup. As your problems occur randomly during the day as well as at night, it could be down to a slight misalignment of the dish ( how old, & anybody working near the dish recently? ), a faulty LNB, water somewhere in the cable, or a tuner problem. Also, don't discount the external interference that has already been mentioned above. Bad weather can affect the signal, although this is often due to slight dish alignment more than anything else.

You could try this. Switch off and disconnect at the mains. Remove the two Dish Inputs at the back of the box. Wait 5 minutes,, then reconnect the Dish Inputs and switch the box on again at the mains. Wait three minutes and press Sky to view.

If you keep getting problems, you'll have to get someone out to look at the whole setup.

Thanks Kenedin, affter reading your post a few mins ago I remembered the monthly window cleaner was around just a few days ago, it started before he cleaned the windows but maybe last month he might have knocked it or something and that PLUS the weather we have been having has made it worse??? I am clueless as you can all guess lol, I am upgrading to Sky+HD though as soon as possible so will put up with it like this for now

Thanks for all your help/suggestions everyone.

Re: Sky TV works fine during day, evening = dead

If I were you, I'd replace the LNB on the dish. It's quite easy to do, and you can get replacement LNBs on Ebay for less than 10. It might just be that the LNB stops working when it gets cold. Good place to start. I'm sure the guys on here can talk you through how to do it, if you decide to do it. If you're no good with ladders, you will have to get a contractor in.

Ooops.... just noticed you're having HD installed soon
