      Problems with Sky+ Box

      Hi All,
I have a problem with my Sky+ box. Sometimes I'm watching and the screen goes all fuzzy with lines over it. Next after a a few seconds, it goes all blue and then a few seconds later completely black. After a good few minutes the sky comes back set on the demo channel. Its as if the Sky box has been reset.
I have my phone cable plugged in and I've even updated the box a few times using the key sequence at startup of the box. I know its updating because I get a message on the screen. Now I dont know what to do because I am outside my warranty. Can anyone advise me what to do? Do I need to get someone out?
      Thanks,
      Imran

I am guessing it is a Thompson receiver with a failing power supply.

If so you can repaire it yourself with parts from Satcure or ring Sky for an engineers call and they will charge 65 to replace it for another one.

Hi Sam, My mistake - I should have posted the model. I have a AMSTRAD DRX-280 (80Gb).
According to the list at the link u posted, my model suffers from power supply problems but I dont think the current problem is to do with that. But what do I know!
      Cheers,
      Imran

Smithy, Sorry I didnt see your post when I last posted. Do you think this problem I get with the Amstrad could be due to the power supply?
      Thanks,
      Imran

Sounds like it, it may be overheating and forcing a reset.

I would ring Sky and get the engineer out to replace it.

      Re: Problems with Sky+ Box

Sometimes, the skybox does as i said above. Other times, I'll be watching a channel and the picture will start getting blocky - basically small blocks will appear in the screen. The picture might a roll up or down or across and is basically unwatchable. Could this be a symptom of the heating as well? The box does NOT reset.

When sky come to replace a box, my understanding is that they give you a refurbished box. Is this true or do they give u a new one? if I'm paying dont I deserve a new one?

      Re: Problems with Sky+ Box

You will get a refurb with a 3 month warranty.

The 65 you will pay will not even cover the cost of making a new box, nevermind the engineers time etc.

If you want a new one you can get them but I would expect with fitting it will cost around 200.00

You could try looking for a used one on e-bay, there are plenty going about but even then you don't know what condition it is in, it could be worse than the one you have.

I consider the 65 Sky charge as a very reasonable price, especially as it includes parts.

      Re: Problems with Sky+ Box

Thanks for the reply Smithy. I was looking on the link Sam provided above which said that the Amstrad and Thompson boxes all had power problems. On the other hand, pace boxes were considered quite good. Do you know if you can choose which box you want?

The thing that concerns me is that I dont want to frig around again 7-8 months down the line after the new replacement box has screwed up again.

This current box has already been changed once already because there was a fault last time but it was within the warranty period. Now I suspect that this 'new' box was refurbished .

      Re: Problems with Sky+ Box

You can choose the model ONLY if you buy it yourself. I suggest you try Michael. He sells Sky+ boxes for about 70 inclusive:
TV, VCR and Digibox (Satellite receiver) repairs, spares, sales - UK service
