      Sound Issues

Hi there, just joined and hoping someone can help.

Since Saturday I've been getting funny noises coming through the telly, I initially thought it was the tv as it's quite new and thought something might've gone wrong, as it turns out I believe it's something to do with the Sky.

I've got normal Sky through a Sony Digibox, roughly 5 years old. Since Saturday we've been watching terrestrial tv, but tonight I decided to put myself through the ordeal of the noise to get to the bottom of it.

I get 3 1/2 minutes of clear sound, and then what I can only describe as a 'helicopter noise' slowly creeps in and then takes over full sound. After a further 3 minutes of this, it gradually starts to fade away back to nearly crystal sound and then a surge of 'helicopter' for a second or two and back to normal sound.

Another 3-4 minutes later, it all starts all over again. Exact same timing and the exact pattern of noise.

I know it's not the tv, as it's fine on terrestrial, everything is connected with Scarts and I've checked the seating of each plus making sure all vents are clear. But it still does this noise.

As you can imagine, it's getting quite frustrating, so I'm wondering if it's something to do with the digibox or the dish. The quality of the pictures is completely unaffected, it's just noise.

I think that's it, anything else you need to know just ask. I hope we can work something out.

P.S. I was considering getting the Sky+ HD when it was at 75, but it's gone back up to 99, so I'm not sure if I should be upgrading just yet or not.

      Thanks everyone!
      Mark.

      Don't watch x-factor then!

      Welcome to the forums

Does the noise happen if you watch sky through the RF cable as well as scart?

      Re: Sound Issues

Haha! How did you know we were watching the X-factor?

I've no idea about the RF, I managed to work out how to connect the TV, Sky, Video and DVD with Scarts on one magical day 5 years ago. I doubt I'd be able to do it again!

I'll try swapping the Scart from the Digibox > TV. Is that a known fault (Scarts failing), or is this just a 1st port of call in finding a solution?

      Thanks!

well some scarts are bad quality and are unrelable and some just give up, rf is worse as they snap inside, and the x factor , because it like a helipcopter cover your ears

      Re: Sound Issues

if the scarts are untouched, then they dont just break. If you keep moving the TV or maybe have kids that fiddle or pets, then 'yes' they could break.

Some scarts can produce poor quality pic/sound, but they don't really deteriorate.

I'd guess that the box is probably failing, although it isn't a known problem on the sony.

65 for sky to come out and replace it. You're probably best calling sky and say you're thinking about cancelling as your box is broke and see if they will do you a deal on a new Sky+ box.

      Re: Sound Issues

as I say, a cable doesn't just fail if it is left in place untouched and not in damp or extreme temperatures. A cable has no moving parts and no circuit board.

      Re: Sound Issues

Changed over the Scart, and so far the helicopter hasn't shown up. The one I've taken out has quite a thick cable, whereas the the replacement is a thinner cable. I wonder what the difference is.

No kids, 2 cats, and the equipment doesn't get moved.

Andddddddd............. just as I type, the helicopter is back.

Eeek! I'd rather go ahead and get Sky+ HD, than get a techician out. It's a shame if the box is indeed on its way out, I love the look of it.
