      Sky+ Hard Drive

I have just ordered Sky+ and it will be installed next week.
There are a few questions I would like to know about the Hard Drive
While you are simply just watching TV without recording or playing back, is the hard drive permantley on?
Does it switch off when in Standby?
Surely If the Hard drive is on all the time, then the reliability of the hard drive must be very limited to a long life, especially if you are one who likes to channel hope like me.
It appears that a standard Digibox would be considerably more reliable!
Also will I get a new box capable of getting Sky Anytime?
If The Hard Drive Was To Fail Would The box Still Receive?

When powered up, the hard drive is running usually because the instant rewind function is saving 30mins or so of the programme you are watching and just keeps spooling.

When in standby the heads get parked (unless you are recording something of course)

The hard drive in my Sky+ box lasted around 3 years and was never turned off. When it started to fail I replaced it with another drive bought from e-bay which has been in ever since and only took 5mins to swap.

The receiver will still work if the drive starts to fail, assuming it is not a major problem which may cause the box into standby.

Yes it is, whilst watching live TV the program is recorded by the hard drive enabling you to both pause and rewind the live programme.

Does it switch off when in Standby?

Yes it does, but will powerup to record 'Sky Anytime' programmes during the night

      Possibly
It appears that a standard Digibox would be considerably more reliable!

Since the standard box has no moving parts then you may be correct.

Also will I get a new box capable of getting Sky Anytime?

      Yes
If The Hard Drive Was To Fail Would The box Still Receive?

No (well I don't think so)

      Re: Sky+ Hard Drive

All I can say is look at PCs in an office. Do they get swicthed off at night or are they left switched on. In my office (about 5000 pcs), they are all permantly on.

yes the more the HD is on the lower the lifetime, but equaly the more a hard drive is switched on and off the lower the lifestime.

Don't worry about it and go for it.
