      Ridiculous Costs for Sky HD

Admin note: I've merged two duplicate threads (with replies). Please, just one thread per topic.

      Mornin' all.

Wondering if you'd lend me a spot of help ? Just the other day I finally took the plunge and bought a 'proper' HD telly, which I fortunately got nicely set up with Sky + and the surround sound after hours of work.

However, I thought if the telly is meant for high def broadcasts, it's probably worth looking at the Sky HD packages.

Well I've been a Sky TV customer for 10 years, Sky + for 4 years and a Sky BB Max subscriber; and they still expect me to pay 299 for the box and an extra tenner a month!

I find that absurd if i'm quite honest.

And the fact that there are only 17 HD channels available?

So my question to you Sky experts today is how can I get these ridiculous costs down, I want to go for HD the proper way and not cut corners buying the box seperate etc.. but there's no way I can afford so much extra to pay on the gigantic Sky subscription at the minute.

So is there any hope for me?

Could I give 'em a ring and try and work my way round for a free box, or is that pretty much out the question?

      Thanks in advance

Sorry to state the obvious, but it might have been better to sound out Sky before you got the telly.

You won't get a free box and the full price of the HD box is substantially higher than Sky are looking to charge customers.

i also have a hd tv but no sky HD, i will be waiting for the price to come down for the boxes(year or two i would have thought).

you can get a hd off od somewhere like ebay, but the cost is about the same.

sky do have the most HD channels of any supplier, so i cant see them lowering the sub from 10 per month any time soon

Why not spend the money on a PS3 which can be used as a blu ray player as well

You do realise that Sky have to pay for the boxes don't you? The STB manufacturer doesn't care how long you have been a subscriber and charge Sky - and in fact Sky subsidise the boxes so you don't even pay the full price.

Sky don't make any money out of HD at the moment.

Re: Ridiculous Costs for Sky HD

My big compalint is not the price of the HD box (I can have one for 199 as I take TV, Talk and Broadband) but the ridiculous installation cost when I already have Sky+. I won't pay 60 for a guy to plug the box in. If that 60 wasn't charged I'd be an HD customer tomorrow.

The cost of the HD PVR is extremely good. Just look at Freesat where a simple HD box costs 160 and that's a single tuner and no HDD. And Freesat has essentially nothing to watch in HD.

I suspect it will be many years before I jump to HD (even though I have an HDTV) although with Granadaland going completely Digital next year we may see some special offers here - as occured in Cumbria when the first Analogue switch off happened.

      Re: Sky HD: Ridiculous Costs

You won't be able to avoid the 10 per month extra but you should be able to get an HD box for 99 or 169 depending on how generous they are feeling.....

One thing to think about is the new Pace boxes are meant to be hitting the streets in the not too distant future so may be worth holding out for one of those if you don't mind the wait....

Re: Ridiculous Costs for Sky HD

I was told unofficially, when we went to Sky last year, that a Sky HD box, costs Sky in the region of about 500 to purchase. This person is a good friend at Sky and would not have any reason to mislead us, as they are not even in that department.

I did manage to get mine fitted for 299 with a Sky+ box as well. But that was later on in the year, approx Septemberish. Maybe hang on a bit and see if Sky repeat a similar offer?

It is definitely worth the cost of it, with a HD TV it makes all the difference

I got mine from a local satellite company and didn't have to take installation. There a few things you need to do to activate the system and you should be able to find everything you need on the internet. The only hardware install is literally changing the cables over (If you have Sky + already that is!)

Re: Ridiculous Costs for Sky HD

We got ours on a Sky offer for 250 and we blagged free installation as my wife buttered up the sales rep.

As somebody said the new Pace and Samsungs are on the way with the redesigned Thompson boxes, all 3 of these have been redesigned so hopefully the cost of these will be lower.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!
