sky only issue amstrad sky + boxes

just had sky + box installed today i asked the installer if he had any other boxes besides amstrad and he said no coz sky have bought the amstrad company so they only issue these boxes now .what i want to know is this true coz i wanted the pace box for my sky +. i spent £99 the sky box so i should at least choose what i want

Sky bought Amstrad a while ago, I doubt they intend on solely use them for STB's, that would alienate all other manufacturers. The next HD box is a Pace one for example.

What's wrong with Amstrad...

My 8 year old Amstrad Sky STB is will going strong as is our Amstrad Sky+ box.

But generally I don't believe you can to choice what hardware you receive from Sky its simply what the installer has on the day but if you went with a 3rd party installer you'd get much more choice.

Yes, I should also have said I have both Pace and Amstrad Sky+ boxes and the only differences is the Pace is slightly quieter, but I might notice that more as the Amstrad is in the bedroom.

Just to clarify - Sky bought only the Satellite TV arm of Amstrad plc. (You'll notice that "The Apprentice" is still chaired by Alan Sugar and not by Murdoch!)

when sky digital first started you could choose the equipment for a short time then sky found it hard to keep large supplies of all boxes ie pace, amstrad, grundig, fergusson, thomson, panasonic for its installers

i got to choose mine and went with the panasonic which got the best reviews in tv and satelite magazines to this day its still going strong, never more than the occassional freeze, getting sky+ within next few weeks through recommend a friend have to say goddbye to panasonic unable to choose new box

It's more than quietness, the Pace PVR's are much more reliable and robust than the Amstrad boxes. We have two Pace PVR's but then I go to my local independent for my Sky hardware not Sky - same deals but you can select the box of your choice and the installer will call at a time convenient to suit you. If I had to have and Amstrad box then I would decline the Sky service.
