Re: Beware of bogus Sky TV warranty letters/telephone calls.

I've just had a cold call from Satellite Direct pushing me to sign up for an extended warranty fro my HD+ system. When I asked them if they had any affiliation with SKY they said no and when I asked them how they got my phone number they said that SKY had given them it together with my name and address which is X directory!!!

If SKY have been doling out my name, address & phone number to third parties then I'm not happy

Re: Beware of bogus Sky TV warranty letters/telephone calls.

I have not received any mail or calls since sending them notice that I required them to cease processing my details for the purposes of direct marketing under Sec 11 Data Protection Act. Apparently you can not stop them holding your details but can stop them using them. Information Commisioner not happy if they fail to comply.

Just asking them to take you off the list is no good as as soon as they buy new list you are fair game - they must have a method of screening out those who invoke S.11.

I sent letter to DSW containing a request to cease processing my data for direct marketing purposes This was to Co Director by recorded delivery. Also Trading Standards in Liverpool are seeking info from people being harrassed/misled by this company. Look out also for Digital Services (UK) Ltd of Widnes -- sail very close to wind and only admit to not being SKY or D&G unless you press them

Letter included this for his information.

Sec 11 of the Data Protection Act.

Right to prevent processing for purposes of direct marketing

      (1) An individual is entitled at any time by notice in writing to a data controller to require the data controller at the end of such period as is reasonable in the circumstances to cease, or not to begin, processing for the purposes of direct marketing personal data in respect of which he is the data subject.
      (2) If the court is satisfied, on the application of any person who has given a notice under subsection (1), that the data controller has failed to comply with the notice, the court may order him to take such steps for complying with the notice as the court thinks fit.
      (3) In this section “direct marketing” means the communication (by whatever means) of any advertising or marketing material which is directed to particular individuals.

I got a letter from these jokers today. Section 11 notice sent and to play it safe I threw in a section 10 notice for good measure. They very nicely provided me a freepost envelope to send the data protection notice in

Also complained to the MPS as I'm registered with them and the ASA as they have breached 2 adjudications against them and made some new false statements

I had a phone call trying to sell me a warrntry on my system. The number was 08001218143, I have never known companies to use a free number before so this one stood out a mile.

If Sky or anyone that works for them is giving out our details then I would have thought that they are in breach of the Data Protection Act.

      Hi AndyUK
I have also taken out 'protection' from what appears to be the same people and am now in the process of being contacted by someone called Skylight(?).
Unfortunately I don't seem to have their phone number(doh!). Any chance of letting me have the number you found?

Re: Beware of bogus Sky TV warranty letters/telephone calls.

Got my first letter from this lot today. Now I feel I've arrived . I'm not inclined to do anything, except shred it - and return the freepost envelope, empty of course.

I'm curious as my Sky system is coming up to 12 months old - it was installed by a subcontractor, not a Sky installer. Unfortunately, I've thrown away their details, but maybe they have been selling on subscriber names?

I like the scary letter though, especially the bit that says "Sky will charge you 72 for a call out", then ask for 95 to cover a Sky+ system. Errm, maths lesson anyone?

Re: Beware of bogus Sky TV warranty letters/telephone calls.

I just had a letter from these guys 3 days ago - filed straight in the bin. Funnily enough my warranty is up at the end of April too. Lucky guess I hope!
