Returning customer question - old sky boxes

Hi, I used to be a sky customer (about 2 years ago) but I had to leave for financial reasons :-( but am now thinking of rejoining... my question is:
I have an existing SKY HD box in my living room and a SKY + box in my dining room, if I was to rejoin would I be able to get 1 free HD box, then use my existing HD box for multiroom ? and if I did would I be able to watch the programs that I recorded on the box a couple of years ago
(it's got my daughters birhtday card being shown on CBeebies that I'd like to see again and record on my phone so I don't lose it)

Thanks in advance for any help offered...

There is no reason why you can't use your second HD box for multi room. However, previous recordings may not be accessible. Do you have a blue or white card, with the former I don't think the recording will be accessible, with the latter it may be.

If the recording is on a BBC channel you can actually extract it from the HDD to your PC and play, share and copy it. This can be done using +Extract - +Extract - free software that rips free-to-air recordings from a Sky+ hard disk

Re: Returning customer question - old sky boxes

I'd never heard of +Extract before I'll give it a go, the card in my Sky+HD box is white, so fingers crossed I'll be able to view my old stuff.

I want to sign up online (to get quidco) but there doesn't seem to be an option for multiroom with my own box. Should I just pick the basic Sky box then bin it when it arrives ?

      Thanks again for your help

Re: Returning customer question - old sky boxes

Thanks IsItMe, as you seem to know your stuff (and seem very reponsive!), the deal I'm going for is 100 quidco, 25 M&S vouchers, free Sky+HD box and free SkyHD box (which I've heard is very sellable) then 52.50 a month for the entertainment pack and HD and multiroom.

Do you think this is a good deal or might i get better if I forget the quidco and just call sky and try and negotiate ?

EDIT - just realised that SKY's default option is to move phone & broadband for 12.50 - now I've took that off it's come down to 40 a month

That is pretty good, but taking out the phone and broadband might reduce your Quidco cashback. How long is that for 6months, a year?

Re: Returning customer question - old sky boxes

I don't think the 40 a month has a time limit, but I'm not sure whether I'll lose the quidco without the Phone/Broadband - it's doesn't mention it on quidco, but then when I follow the quidco link it goes to deals that all include phone/broadband.
I think I'll give them a call - I've got nothing to lose and can always try quidco after.

Years ago they used to offer better deals at the end of the month (to meet sales targets), but I was hoping to get installed before the kids break up for Xmas (Dec 11th) - do you know if this is still the case and if I did wait until then end of Nov, is it normally weeks before the install is done ?

      Thanks again

I think the nearer you get to Xmas, the longer the wait will be. There is always a surge of sign ups just before Xmas and often some are disappointed by having to wait longer, till after Xmas is some cases.

      Interesting

I've just signed up tonight and am actually quite excited at the prospect of getting to watch my favourite programmes again....what a sad life I have getting excited over the telly!

I have an old dead white Sky+ box that we've been using for Sky's freesat service. It needs a new hard drive

So you reckon it's still sellable?

Re: Returning customer question - old sky boxes

The simplest box supplied for new installations is the SkyHD STB. This is much the same as the Sky+ HD STB, but smaller and has no hard drive. It also does not have a UHF input/output, so the Magic eye does not work with it.

Many people sell the old Sky+ STB on eBay. Check out the prices there.

If the hard drive is failing, then be careful about replacing the drive. Currently the price of hard drives has rocketed due to the floods in Thailand.

      PlusNet Fibre since Jan 2021
Previously Sky Fibre & Sky BB since 2010.
