      Best location for router

It will be downstairs close to the master phone socket, and a 20/30m ethernet cable to the main pc(upstairs)
But im planning on using my laptop and psp to access it wirelessly.

Will where the router is placed effect the wireless connectivity? I was just planning on leaving it sat behind the tv/sky box etc on the floor, but theres a lot of electrical cables etc there so wondering if that would cause problems.
Would it make a difference to have it higher up, away from electrical appliances etc?

      Cheers

Mine is sat on the floor behind the sofa and seems fine, fit the stand to it so it upright this helps with cooling as they do run hot. Dont think the tele will make much odds but keep it away from cordless phone base stations etc. The only time I have problems was when I put the router upstairs while I was decorating and ended up with a poor wireless signal downstairs. So it is back behind the sofa again now.

      Re: Best location for router

If you get interference from other electrical items as I did changing the channel on the router solved this.

      Re: Best location for router

Where is the best place to get a very long ethernet cable? I want to do a similar thing as the router must be downstairs for my wife's work laptop. Is it possible to just get a long cable with connectors fitted, or is it best to get a cable with no connectors and put a connector on one end and a wall mounted box on the other that I can then put a short pre-made cable into?

      Cheers

      Re: Best location for router

From a wireless point of view the position of the router can be important. The fewer the obstacles, e.g. walls, furniture, other electrical devices especially microwaves and DECT phones the better. If it tucked behind something and that something is electrical then it can affect the signal.

If you don't want to explore the delights of crimping your own ethernet cables, then long lenghts already terminated can be had from for example:
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

I got mine from good ole ebay, 30m for 4, what a bargain.
30m from a network/pc shop will cost much more.

Altho i kind of overestimated the length needed so am left with about 5/10m spare connected the to router, might cut it shorter and fit my own rj45 end.

      Re: Best location for router

I set mine up via Ethernet then plugged it in next to the master socket downstairs in the hall. It near choked to death on the dust bunnies - my fault, I'm responsible for cleaning down there - so I moved it back up here and re-connected via cable. Using channel 11 it seems to make no difference to connectivity via wireless from the laptop elsewhere in the house.
