      Downstream Connection Speed

What exactly does the "downstream connection speed" on my sky sagem router actually mean or measuring as it states it is 21 MBs yet my download is peaking at about 5 MBs

      Re: Downstream Connection Speed

Your connection speed is measured in Megabits per second (Mb/s) as a Byte is equal to eight bits. With a connection speed of 21 Mb/s it should take approximately two seconds to download a five Megabyte file provided there is no other traffic using the connection.

      Re: Downstream Connection Speed

Thanks for that but that's not what I wanted to know.

When I phone Sky support they always quote that everything with my broadband is fine as the downstream connection is 21 Mbs but all the test I have tried show that I am getting between 0.8 Mbs and approx 5 MBs as my download speed, this is borne out by the time it takes to download files.

So what are they, and the router, actually measuring as it does not represent the real world figures that I am getting from either my own experience or from the various speed test sites and software I have used.

      Downstream Connection Speed

The speed you are seeing is the speed the router is syncing at, in other word the speed of the connection as it gets to the router.

How are you connected and what devices are you doing the speed tests on? If you have only done a speed test wirelessly are you able to try it wired?

      Re: Downstream Connection Speed

      Thanks for reply.

I am connected wired and wireless, wired on 2 computers and wireless on 5 devices.

I have disconnected every device the connected them back one at a time checking each time, same result.

I have tried rebooting the server, speed goes up for a very very short time, one test, afterwards then reverts back to the very slow down and up speeds; the same when I tried changing the microfilter.

The speed drop is throughout the day and week and pretty consistent.

I have just done a test and got 1.87 Mbps down and 0.09 Mbps up.

I have changed nothing on my home network from when I was getting decent speeds.

The only thing I have yet to try is connecting directly to the master BT socket.

The thing that seems strange is that when I rebooted the router the speed momentarily returns to normal then drops off dramatically.

When contacting Sky I am fobbed of with the excuse that as I am in the process of changing to FTTC that this is the reason for the slow speeds and they do not seem to be overly concerned with trying to sort things out; the upgrade is over a week away. As far as I can see the pending upgrade should make no difference, surely all that will happen is a change of connections in the exchange and cabinet on the actual day of the upgrade plus using the new router.

      Re: Downstream Connection Speed

I agree with your last statement there, I can't see how a pending switch over to FTTC would cause any problems.

What are your noise margin stats?

Also, have you tried performing a quiet line test (preferably with a corded telephone) - dial 17070 and select 'quiet line test'.

Perform a speed test here and post your results please.

I think, just to exclude exchange congestion, it's best to run the Broadband Quality Monitor (BQM) on your IP.

      Re: Downstream Connection Speed

Your noise margin is very low which can cause a lot of errors. Can you reboot to get it back up to default and note what this is please. DLM may have set your noise to 3 db, which may be proving a bit too low for your line, it should correct this if it is working properly, but sometimes it goes wrong.

      Re: Downstream Connection Speed

      Success at last, I hope.

I tried a factory default reset and I am now back up to approx 17 MBs down and 1 MBs up.

Cannot remember changing any router settings apart from admin password and SSID name and password before. I've changed them again and it's still at the higher speeds. Hope it lasts.

Thanks for the help from everyone here.

      Regards... Colin

      Re: Downstream Connection Speed

Curses,, the problem is back again.

Lasted all yesterday afternoon and evening now back to abysmal download speeds, one test showed download of 0.69 and an upload of 1.09!
