      Port forwarding / remote access

      Hi,

I'm trying to set up port forwarding for SSH access (via a non-standard port - let's say port 10xx) for one of the computers on my local network in the form 192.168.0.yyy.

I have set up SSH correctly and I can log in to the SSH host (192.168.0.yyy) from the local network on port 10xx using putty (see screenshot below)

I understand I can't forward port 80, because the router's remote access interface comes up when trying to access it; however I assume other ports should work fine.

I have set up rules as shown in the picture below to forward port 10xx to 192.168.0.yyy (which is the server where the SSH service is running

I get my external IP address from What Is My IP Address At IP-Adress.com - Whois, My IP, & Free Tools! and try to connect using putty (for SSH) to my external IP (which is in the format 2.217.ppp.qqq) and the port as 10xx (same port as before and as was set up in the firewall settings). The only difference is that I change the IP address from the internal one to the external one.

I then get the error "Network error: Connection refused"

Any ideas why this might not be working? Are certain ports blocked by Sky? Are certain ports known to be allowed?

Based on the below links, it looks like Sky doesn't block ports, but if so, why isn't this working?

Re: Port forwarding / remote access

Ok - I have solved this.

It turns out that for some reason, I'm not able to connect to my own external IP address from inside my LAN, except to port 80 (which hosts the router interface - maybe this is a mechanism to prevent people from creating infinite loops??).

I tried switching off my smartphone's wifi access and using it to connect to my computer using ssh (using my external IP address 2.217.ppp.qqq, port 10xx) and it works. I used the android connectbot app.

I hope this helps someone else!

You can always check whether you are exposing an open port to the internet by using a website such as:

The older Sky routers do not support NAT Loopback, which is required if you want to access your LAN using your public address, although it has been reported the newer ones do. Information on NATLB can be found here -
