      Smile Beta Trial

      Hi there,

The following has been posted on the Sky forums. If you are interested, please respond by 5pm tomorrow:

Sky Help Forum - Product Beta Trial - Help & Support from the Official Sky Forum
      Hi All,

Our development team are working on a new edition of our Sky Hub and we’re looking for some forum people to trial the unit before we launch. Interested? We have limited space on this trial, but is a good opportunity to provide input to the future product development.

If so, please contact us via PM to CommunityTrials. We need to know your current router/Sky Hub details, the type of line you have (ADSL or Sky Fibre) and if you tend to have things connected wired or wireless.

Also, please note that this product is still in development and we will be asking that trial members do not publically disclose information about it whilst on the trial. Please only reply if you agree to this request.

The deadline for the chance to be part of this trial is 5pm on Wednesday 15th May. We will then contact everyone from Thursday to let them know if they were successful in joining the trial.

      Thanks

Ooooo a new hub. Time to start the sweep-stake on gigabit ports and dual band wireless?

lol - As much as it will be fun to speculate, can I remind people about Sky's NDA. You will be expected to agree to this.

The 3rd paragraph makes it clear about being asked from the outset that they do not want people to disclose the specification of the router publicly prior to launch, much like we had to with the Sky Hub SR101.

There are many other features which we would all love Sky to incorporate within their routers as well. Perhaps they have listened and are getting it right with this one.

Maybe I won't put myself forward and stay free to speculate?

Seriously though, do you think gigabit ports and dual band should be 'a given', considering the recent Virgin and BT announcements? To me, without these I'm not sure what other features would necessitate a new version.

Any other features on the wishlist? Maybe 802.11ac?

      Re: Beta Trial

I believe that the Sky Hub SR101 was in development for some considerable period before the beta group was started last year. There were several items which needed to be resolved prior to it being launched and on the whole these were achieved.

I believe that the Sky Hub SR101 does have the ability to work at 300mbps but that there is a technical issue preventing this. I am hoping that the next router will have indeed resolved this issue.

After the all fuss which was levied at the SR101, I too am hopeful that there will be a lot more behind this next router from Sky.

I am just guessing, but perhaps it will be named "Sky Hub SR102". Of course this is purely a guess and not based upon any actual knowledge.

I wonder if the location of that post is a clue to the type of user they are looking for? (it's in the fibre broadband section)?

      Re: Beta Trial

I expect they will want to have a reasonable representation from both Fibre and ADSL. Although you would not realise it from this forum, Fibre users are still very much in the minority. They would be stupid indeed to develop a router solely for fibre.

      Re: Beta Trial

Whilst Fibre customers may well be the minority, having a separate 1Gbit WAN port for the BTO Modem would IMHO be an important addition IMHO.

With the upcoming upgrade for BT Infinity customers to 220/20 speeds, it would be silly for Sky to miss the opportunity.
