      Sky Netgear Router Problems

Ive had the Sky Netgear router since we moved over to Sky broadband.

Never had any problems with it until recently, it randomly drops or wont allow devices to connect to it.

My PC, PS3, SkyHD box, connect to it via network cable. Laptop, iphone etc connect via wifi.

1st thing to point out is the router never has problems connecting to the internet - it does that fine.

First problem i noticed was the laptop was trying to do windows updates it kept saying it had no internet connection - it was connected to the router, loading webpages it get the cannot find server message etc - my main PC which is connected via a cable to the router worked fine, checked the ps3 connected via cable it connected fine,.

But on my PC when i typed in 192.168.0.1 for the router address i get cannot find server. tried on the PS3 which was connecting the the internet fine - loaded the PS3 web browser typed the the router ip addess cant find it.

Switch the router off - then back on - i can reconnect via its local address.

Now the fun part its switches around - anything connected via wire cant connect - yet iphone and laptop via wifi can (both can acess the internet fine)

Clearly thee is some fault with the router - i emailed sky support about it - typical standard email, check you router is connected to the BT socket etc etc - thats not the problem.

Went onto live chat explained the problem conected to the sky bb network is fine, the router has problems as a router etc. Check your connecting to the BT line.

typical going through your onscreen script rubbish - i dont know i the sky support person done it, or it just happened at that time - router lost its connection to net.

It wont make a difference if its connected to any isp network - the router part of it should work and its not working as it should.

Ive reset the router, reset it to factory/defauly settings - its like it freezes or crashes and wont allow anything to happen.

Sky site says 69 for new router - i dont want a fancy sky box, i just want one that works, you can by adsl routers for 30, why should i have to pay 69 for a router that as sky stamped on the front of it.

      Try connecting via a wire.

If thisis successful try Inssider. This application will check wireless interference. You should then change the channel of the router.

resetting to factory defaults involves putting the pin in the back for about 30 secs, not just a few secs.

Failing that phone up to leave and hope for the best, you might get a recon box free.

Advice given is in good faith and if taken is done so at your own risk. If in doubt consult a qualified person.

      Re: Sky Netgear Router Problems

My venerable netgear router died in January. I'd had it since I joined Sky in 2007. Basically, it had become progressively flakier: dropping net connections and getting slower and slower, ethernet connections not working, etc - I tried everything I knew to resurrect it but it was gone. Phoned Sky CS who read through their check list and I answered 'done that' to all their requests. Spoke politely but firmly to the support person, who tried to sell me a new hub for 69. I intimated that I might leave because I would then get a new free router from another ISP. She, who by the way cannot authorise a free replacement, then transferred me to someone else in I think the 'leaving department', who also tried to sell me a new hub. I stuck firmly and politely to my guns, emphasising that I did not expect nor need the latest bit of kit, but just wanted a working router. I never said I would leave. I just pointed out that I would be given a free router from a new ISP. Eventually he said that though it was impossible for me to get free the latest hub, he could offer me a free Sagem F@ST 2504n , which was the previous latest thing. I said yes thank you very much and 4-5 days later it turned up in the post. After the obligatory tuning period of about 8-10 days, I am now connected at 15646 kbps where with my old netgear, at it's best, I was getting around 13300 kbps. One very satisfied customer.

Unfortunately all routers have a life span and many of the GTs originally suppied by Sky are coming to the end of their's. It looks like the LAN port side of yours is faulty and there have been 2 or 3 reports on the forum of this happening. You have two choices really, pay Sky around 70 for their overpriced white brick or buy one of your own. I know what I will buy when mine finally gives up the ghost and it will not have the Sky logo on it.

      Re: Sky Netgear Router Problems

Getting the user name and password for the GT is the easiest of all Sky routers, simply tick the box, press the button and put your LAN MAC into the space. Copy and paste the result to a text document and that's it. You are better to copy and paste the LAN MAC from the router status page intothe box as any mistake will cause the wrong result to be given. You will find the password generator here- Sky router password generator

With regards a replacement that depends on how much you want to spend. ADSL routers vary from about 25 to over 200. Decide what features you want, wireless N, gigabit LAN, USB ports etc.

One of the better lower priced routers is the TD-W8968, it is not gigabit but unless you are in the habit of moving very large files around your network, that is no drawback.
      TP-Link TD-W8968 300Mbps Wireless N USB ADSL2+ Modem Router for BT connections: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

If your budget can stand it the billion 7800 comes very highly recommended on the forum.

When the time comes I will probably go for the TP Link or its successor.
