Red face Recommend me a Router Please

      Hey guys,

I currently would like to upgrade my non-Sky router which is the Netgear DGN 2000 to a newer one as I'm currently experiencing quite a few dropouts and the Sky Router that I had before wasn't able to withstand the usage it experience. Therefore, I would like to ask whether someone could point me in the right direction for a new router that would work with the ADSL line as I bought a Belkin N750 which wouldn't work even with the right details a couple of weeks back.

Therefore, could some please help me, to find a router that would work and preferably one with a USB port.

      Thanks
      Neil

As a suggestion, provided that you are considering getting Fibre and that the DGN2000's Ethernet side still works, why not get a Fibre router and forward everything to the new Cable router?

If you shop around, many of the Cable routers can connect directly to Sky's Fibre connection.

Do check what is failing though. The DGN2000 has a history of problems relating to the fact that it overheats. I went through 3 of them. The third one I still have, but the WiFi is shot. The previous two failed on Ethernet and WiFi.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

You will need to give some indication of your budget. ADSL routers are available from about 30 to 200+.

I think your N750 is probably a cable router which will not connect direct to an ADSL line. If it is not, you should be able to connect it, unless your line is MER only, in which case a Billion Bipac 7800n is probably your best choice, but they are expensive.

Thank you for the reply Scubbie, I was planning to get Fibre, but I just recently learnt that Fibre isn't installed where I live. The Cable setup was one i was thinking about using, but I really would like only 1 box. Also, I never knew about the over heating problems for the DGN2000, the only reason I bought it was great reviews; should of done better research.

Thank you for the reply Isitme, for the budget, I would like to spend less than maybe 100. Also, I had made a mistake, I purchased the Belkin N600 not the Belkin N750 and I absolutely sure it was an ADSL router ( Bought this one ). When you talking about the MER line, what does that actually mean and how would you test you line if you please tell me. I've taken a look at the Billion Bipac 7800n, it does seem a bit off my budget, but it seems like a great router.

Re: Recommend me a Router Please

That is indeed a modem router and provided you are on PPPoA there is no reason why it should not connect.

To check if you are on MER, look at the Network type under the ADSL port on the router Status page. You can also check by looking at the router statistics under the WAN port Status column. It will show PPPoA, MER or PPPoA/MER.
