      I Keep Getting Disconnected

For some reason, I keep getting disconnected, the internet will be up for x amount of minutes, then suddenly the connection drops out and it says that I am disconnected.

I don't use wireless, I have it switched off, is there anyway someone could be getting into the router and disconnecting me? It has been happening off and all evening, no specific time periods.

I have rebooted the router, reset it, but to no avail, I will get the internet back, then all of a sudden I will lose connection without warning.

      Any ideas/help appreciated

      Thank you

      Brian

There could be a fault on your line or the router could be faulty. How is your voice line? If you do have the old Sagem2504 it is possibly the PSU which is failing, they are very susceptible to this. Try another router if you have one.

The modem itself black and silver is brand new, the old one I developed problems on, worryingly the same as this one has started doing, by dropping out the signal, then nothing

These are my router stats. (touch wood the internet has been ok today, so it seems the problem is intermittent)

Are you in the test socket?

Those speeds are dreadful for the attenuation that you have

Sorry to sound slow, what do you mean by test socket and attenuation?

The BT phone socket is downstairs, I have an extension cable which goes upstairs to my bedroom, I have a filter which then goes into the Sega router. I run my Mac and Laptop by ethernet cables ports 1 and 2.

Your attenuation is basically the measure of the line length from the exchange to your socket

Yours is very low in comparison to mine which suggests that you are fairly near to the exchange and the actual speed that your stats show is far less than what I would expect to see

There are some links on the left hand side you need to look for the test / master socket and try to get your stats from that if possible and then post them on here

You may have an issue with internal wiring etc

      Re: I Keep Getting Disconnected

Is there any way the problem could be caused through hackers, piggybacking, my neighbour using my internet connection, or the router being hacked into?

It just seems strange it's intermittent, why did I have problems all yesterday and it's running today without dropping out?

      No

You should be getting far higher speeds your router is synched at 8meg so looks like a wiring issue possibly

If you try the test socket and your speed increases them that would point at the extension cable

      Re: I Keep Getting Disconnected

Thank you very much for your support, patience and time. Very much appreciated. I was worrying someone was getting into my router and disconnecting me, or stealing my internet.

      Re: I Keep Getting Disconnected

Your stats also show you are on G.DMT (ADSL1) which, with your attenuation, means there is a problem somewhere on your line. I would say the problem is with your telephone extension. If this is a standard phone extension it will pick up a lot of interference, reducing your broadband speed. The interference will be intermittent, meaning at one time your connection will stay up and another it will drop out.

You should plug the router and filter directly into the phone socket using only the ADSL extension supplied by Sky. You can then run a Cat5e cable from there to your room. If you need more than 1 connection in your room you can use a switch or even an old router. Do this and you will probably find that you can get a stable speed of over 20Mb.
