    NTP requests but no response

      NTP requests but no response

      Hi all.

      This has been happening for some time, past fews years. I've just ignored it but would like to know exactly what is happening and whether others have the issue as well.

      In my router log I have this entry:

      Dec 8 14:19:13 syslog: Send out NTP request to ntp1.isp.sky.com

      But there is no response from the Sky server, it should read like this right (first NTP request when router was rebooted):

      Jan 1 00:00:23 syslog: Send out NTP request to ntp1.isp.sky.com
      Jan 1 00:00:23 syslog: Time has been set from ntp1.isp.sky.com
      Dec 8 11:49:20 syslog: Received NTP Sync Reply from ntp1.isp.sky.com

      Do you only get a response from the Sky server if your routers time is out of sync? I'm assuming that what I have just mentioned is correct, just wondering if it is correct.?

      Ideally the router should be able to keep it's clock up to date and correct once it has been set.

      Annoyingly all the routers I have seen do not have the ability to maintain their RTC when they are powered off.

      Looking at my own router's logs, there are additional requests whenever the connection has been reset.

      Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
      Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      Mine does the same (since changing from ADSL to Fibre). I've never yet seen a response from the time server in the log! Router time always seems to be correct. Reported it during Sky Hub beta testing - other testers reported seeing the same behaviour but didn't get a response from Sky about it.

      Ah, I noticed it on ADSL. It would get a response and then just suddenly stop responding but requests kept getting sent.

      Now on Fibrew with the Sky Hub, the router gets a response once first powered up but then keeps sending requests with no response.

      I use the NTP server at Strathclyde University and never seem to have a problem-
      130.88.200.4 (ntp.cis.strath.ac.uk)

      Unfortunately NTP server is not a configurable option via GUI on Sky Hub (Fibre) version.
      ++ speedyrite ... powered by NOW Broadband from June 2018 ++
      (previously powered by Sky Broadband from July 2007)

      Sadly not.

      You can't change the NTP server through the GUI at all.
