To be fair they cant say much as i have been running two wireless ap's since before they even knew what the net was

its only been the last 5 years or so that ap's have started popping up around here

I have been in both of my neighbours houses with my laptop fixing theyr pc's in the past
and one of my ap's come through at each neighbours at around 50-55 db and the other 60-65

I dont care what they would say tbh
theyr lucky i fix theyr pc's when they get virus'd up and such

Ditto here! I've had WiFi in this flat since around 2001 on good old 802.11b, and then g. Its only since these neighbours went for cable they got Wireless, and I fully expect half of them only have a cabled desktop PC to the router. Maybe phones / tablets perhaps but unlikely.

Re: Have sky conned me with my router

If i power my wireless down they gain about 10-15 db
my wireless tends to drown them out

the super hub by me boots up at 300mbit and soon drops to a perm 144mbit
maybe you should flood the spectrum like me to force the superhubs down to 144mbit

There are some tricks for the Sky Hub regarding WiFi, but I guess one of the sad truths is out: it doesn't work on the 5GHz channels.

That's the PDF I found Shame on the 5 GHz but suspect it was a cost decision, same as even Draytek sadly who have 2.4/5 switchable but don't fit two radios for simultaneous.

I think it is pretty pointless censoring any talk of this router now, if the OP wants to post any further information, then feel free to do so.

Re: Have sky conned me with my router

Believe me when I say that I too was disappointed when I first received the router about the lack of 5GHz support. Like several other members I have a lot of competing WiFi routers where I live and following a survey last week there are only two, other than my WNDR3800, that work on the 5GHz channels. Both of these are not close enough for me to receive their signal from where I live.

I can easily see over 60 routers from my home using inSSIDer.

Devices such as the iPad, iPhone, various Tablets and Android phones are already able to utilise the 5GHz channels. The PS3 and Xbox don't though. I upgraded my main Laptop's WiFi adaptor so that I could use the 5GHz channels as well. Sadly I couldn't get a built in adaptor for my other Laptop to support the 5GHz channels as well though.

Interestingly when we did the little survey, there were mostly routers which had been supplied by the various ISPs.

Another interesting fact: The USA allows routers and WiFi adaptors to work at a stronger signal strength than is allowed in the UK and Europe.

Re: Have sky conned me with my router

The uk most routers set 17db or so
most routers have a hardware limit of 20db which usa users get

Im set to newzealand for 23db at channel 7-13 on router a
Im set to usa for 23db at channel 1-6 on router b

23db is the max my chipset supports

      23 dBm 200 mW
      20 dBm 100 mW
      17 dBm 50 mW

In the uk you can have upto 20db inc antenna gain
so if your router has 3db omni's on it 17db is the max

Its 36mw for usa and newzealand
      channel 1-11 usa
      channel 1-13 newzealand

You can see why when you get out of the cities. Some homes are massive and have solid brick walls, stopping WiFi. Homeplug is popular

Re: Have sky conned me with my router

My Netgear DG834GT that I have had since day 1 with Sky is beginning to become ropey. Devices linked to it (Laptop, iPad, Smart TVs) keep losing their WiFi connection and when I look at the lights on the router, they're either flashing or amber, or the router is rebooting. Now, I was going to ask Sky to send me their current Sagem, but on the basis the new Hub looks rather nice and sexy and will be their latest offering, I may hold off and put up with it until it becomes generally available.

Is there any news yet at to when they are likely to become available, the cost or if they'd replace my dying Netgear one with one, or would I pay for it? (Read September, which I can wait for as not too far away - and I'd be happy to pay a small premium for it!)
