      Netgear/MER issues

Hi , can one help .
Have a Netgear router / modem , recently connection keeps dropping out , not had any problems for a few years . Go into router stats page and Network type is "MER " , never used to be . Been onto Sky but not much help ( they did not know what MER was ) . Any ideas would be appreciated .

      Re: Netgear/MER issues

It sounds like you have the white Netgear DG834GT and you have had a recent firmware update.

MER is the method Sky are now trying to get everyone to connect to their servers. It is designed to replace PPPoA on their network and had been around for some considerable time. I would suggest that the person you spoke to wasn't familiar with Sky's systems.

Out of interest, could you confirm that you are Sky Broadband Unlimited or Everyday Lite?

The disconnection issues could be related to something more serious, such as a faulty connection. Could you also check you landline and see if there is any background noise?

      Re: Netgear/MER issues

not to hijack the thread but since i got the new firmware update on my dg834gt, its also been losing connection more often, but only during the evenings 10pm+

that firmware update has ruined my router, it also stopped the address reservation. strangely enough today when i went on my router settings it back onto PPPOA, it was MER the other day

thinking of just buying a sagem 2504n

      Re: Netgear/MER issues

Personally I would be inclined to ask for them to either fix it or replace it FOC.

There have been several threads caused by this update leaving several members upset.

      Re: Netgear/MER issues

      Hi ,
Can confirm it is a Netgear DG384GT router , am on Unlimited broadband . The land line is quite noisy , use " Routerstats " to monitor it , Am quite a way from from local exchange , just on the limit when broadband will work . Had problems when first connected a few years ago , but then started leaving router permanently on . Having problems copying router stats , will persevere. Do not when "MER " was first used , have never updated firmware .

The firmware updates automatically, you don't have to do anything. If it is using MER, then it has been updated, the original firmware couldn't.
