Recommended Router to replace the default sky routers

      Hi,

I keep getting poor wifi performance on the default sky router - which router would you recommend.

I have been looking at the Netgear DGND3700

      Thanks

Re: Recommended Router to replace the default sky routers

The DGND3700 has a few issues with poor quality ADSL lines, but should otherwise be fine.

I'm still not 100% happy with mine and am trying a few new things to see if I can identify the cause.

One advantage though is the it can connect to the Sky router via it's WAN Ethernet port. This mean that should Sky make it impossible to connect your own router, you can use the Sky router effectively as a Modem and pass the connection straight through to the DGND3700.

There is some additional news from the Netgear stables:

      • There is a DGND3700v2 due to be released sometime (no time schedule available)
      • The DGND3800 is available in Germany
      • The DGND4000 is likely to be released soon

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      thanks for the quick response

I will shop around this week and purchase one.

I am just so frustrated with the wifi performance with my sky router (need to get the password - but I am sure I can get that somehow)

I don't want to dampen your spirits, but before you splash out a load of cash, see if you can borrow an ADSL router and try to connect it. Many are having difficulties connecting their own router, especially where the line has been changed from PPPoA to MER. It would be more than annoying to spend 100+ only to find you can't get it to connect.

Re: Recommended Router to replace the default sky routers

With that (the MER issue) in mind though, the DGND3700 would connect to the Sky router via the Ethernet WAN port. This would mean that it could still be used, just not to dial the connection.

Shamelessly jumping on this post but if you connect a router to the sky modem can you turn off the security settings on the modem and rely on the new router firewall/port forwarding etc.

I'm asking as I am looking at buying a new rouetr of router/modem in the near furture.

Re: Recommended Router to replace the default sky routers

You can, using the DMZ of the Sky router, provided the other router has a WAN port, ie, a cable type, not ADSL.

So something like this would work fine in that instance as well as providing furture proofing if I moved to a cable only area for instance?

That would be fine, provided your line is not moved to MER only, which could be a problem.

Would not having the sky modem overcome that issue?
