PC only connects after rebooting router.

My router is one of the DG834GT originals and I've had no problems with it since the day I got it. However, for the last week or so, when I switch my PC on in the morning, I have no internet access - the icon in the System Tray has no globe. Disconnecting and reconnecting have no effect, the only cure I have found is to physically reboot the router and as the router is one floor down from the PC this is a bit of pain to have to do every morning. In any event, I am fairly convinced that the fault does not lie with the router, as this is never switched off and is connected to both my SkyHD box and to my Blackberry phone, both of which work fine even when the PC is reporting limited connectivity.

There is no problem with the wireless connection - I get an excellent 5-bar signal. I haven't to my knowledge changed any settings on my PC, although there was a Microsoft Update last week which may have done something.

FWIW, my operating system is 64-bit Vista, and once the router is up and running, it's competely stable and always has been - it's just this minor niggle that's annoying me! Has anyone else experienced anything similar, or can anyone point me in the right direction for a fix? TIA.

Re: PC only connects after rebooting router.

When this next happens could you do the following please:
      • check what IP Address is being reported by your PC
      • with the Blackberry, can you try to see if you can access the router's GUI?

Could you also manually set the DNS Servers on your PC too? Perhaps your could use a public DNS server. Check out this page for a list: Public DNS Server List (Updated March 2012)

Finally, could you see what the current firmware version is on your router and post this too. Recently Sky have been updating the DG834GT and there have been a few reported issues. Whilst checking the firmware version, could you also see if your router is connected via PPPoA or MER too.

Re: PC only connects after rebooting router.

When the problem occurs, I cannot connect to the start page via the PC, so I don't know what IP address I have. When it happened again this morning, I could see via the Blackberry the IP address was 90.197.181.29 and the DNS were 90.207.238.97 and 90.207.238.99, although on the PC I have them set to the OpenDNS ones - 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. Having rebooted the router via the Blackberry, I was then able to connect via the PC, At that point I was showing an IP address of 90.197.181.143 with a Network Type of PPPoA, firmware version V1.04.13.

The problem has to lie with my PC, since there are three other devices which connect to the router with no difficulty at the same time that my PC is reporting limited connectivity - my Sky box, my Blackberry and my brother's PC. Help!

Re: PC only connects after rebooting router.

Sky have been updating the firmware on the DG834GT recently. I wonder if this has anything to do with your issues?

Could you take a look to see if WPA2 is available as a security option for the WiFi?

If it is, then you may wish to consider the following:

      • change the security to WPA2
      • change the SSID & Password
      • reconnect your own computer

Re: PC only connects after rebooting router.

There are two WPA2 options, WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key) and WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK, which of these do you mean?

If I change to WPA2, will my Sky box and Blackberry still be able to connect?

Re: PC only connects after rebooting router.

Try WPA-PSK first as it is more secure. Do test it with your Blackberry too.

In theory all currently supported devices should work with WPA2, but they may require updates.

The fact that you now have WPA2 does confirm that you have the latest firmware update though.

Re: PC only connects after rebooting router.

Well I did as you suggested, with a slight improvement as a result! The router was once again showing as limited access this morning, but disconnecting and reconnecting was enough to clear it this time, so that must count as an improvement...

Re: PC only connects after rebooting router.

      Hmmm... Not brilliant.

How about your other WiFi devices? Are they able to connect?

Could you also try setting the DNS server on your PC to a public DNS server address. This has been known to help in the past.

Re: PC only connects after rebooting router.

The problem has only ever affected my PC. My Blackberry and my brother's PC never had a problem and still don't after the changes I made.

I've always used OpenDNS servers and FWIW I'm running Vista 64-bit and brother's using XP.

TBH, I won't be too upset if all it takes in the morning is a quick reconnect to clear it - it was the having to go downstairs to physically reboot that was the pain (literally - I suffer from arthritis)!

Re: PC only connects after rebooting router.

Well, after behaving itself for a week or so, it's back to square one!

I don't know how relevant this is, but when I rebooted the router via my Blackberry, the Network Type was shown as PPPoA/MER - not sure what this means?
