      Dropping out after 15-20 minutes

      HELP, PLEASE

I have a sky router connected via cable to my PC, it keeps dropping out after 15 minutes,

I have had 2 visits from the Sky Engineers, they said they could find no fault, so I checked my PC, I bought and installed a new ethernet card, a new cable from the router to my PC, I moved the router nearer the BT point, and run a cable to my PC

I have to reset the router everytime it drops out, or reboot the PC

When it is connected, it is pretty good for 15-20 minutes then thats it until I reboot either the PC or router

The Wifi seems fine though on the laptops

      Any ideas ?

If it is the PC that is loosing its connection to the router and not the router that is loosing its connection to the internet, it is possibly either a power saving function kicking in or a driver problem. Open the Device Manager, expand the Network section and double click your ethernet adapter. Look on the Power management tab and make sure that the 'turn off the device' box is not ticked.

If that is not the reason, try going to the ethernet adapters web site and download the latest drivers.

Re: Dropping out after 15-20 minutes

Where do I find this device manager ?

      I am using Windows XP

I have no power saving functions ticked on my PC, when I shut down, it shuts down, I dont have the 'hibernation' enabled

The router is brand new, they sent me a new one, in case it was the router that was at fault (the same problem persists even with this new one

I think the firm ware is upto date

Open the Start menu and right click the My Computer link and select Properties. Click the Hardware tab and select the Device Manager button.

The drivers you need are for the ethernet card, not the router.

It is the Power tab you should be looking at. Changing the Advanced settings can cause more problem. See attached.

Re: Dropping out after 15-20 minutes

I would still be inclined to re-install the card drivers. Even if they are up-to-date they could be corrupted. Realtek release new drivers in June last year, are these the ones you have? If the drivers are up to date you will usually get an option to 'Repair existing drivers', if you get this choose it.

Re: Dropping out after 15-20 minutes

I have tried to update the drivers, it comes up with the drivers are the best it can find

there is nothing to repair the drivers

I have a Realtek RL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC in the PC (dont know if that helps any )
