      Sagem N router ethernet speed

      Hi all,
I just ordered a new 'N' router from Sky, but they couldn't tell me what speed the Lan was (doesn't bode well). Could anybody tell me please?

I'm wanting to stream full HD films from my PC hard drive to the TV, 3D movies too.

The Sagem 2504N LAN is 10/100Mb/s

WiFi is 144Mb/s over a single channel.

There are many WiFi n adaptors that will connect at 150Mb/s over a paired channel, but only 72Mb/s over a single channel.

ack, not fast enough by far then, I need a gigabyte router. I suspected as much, they first guy I spoke to said it was a gigabyte router, but I could tell he didn't actually have a clue.

      Thanks for the reply

Re: Sagem N router ethernet speed

You could do much the same as myself: Purchase and use your own router.

Read the discussions on this first.

Technically it is against Sky's T&Cs, but no one has been punished as a result of using their own routers.

MER is an issue. Should Sky block all PPPoA connections, then overnight we would have to switch back to using the Sky routers. This could be a real headache for Sky as I suspect many have sold their Sky routers on eBay and they would have to arrange replacements to be dispatched (at our expense probably).

Some favour the Billion routers, whilst others are going for the Netgear range.

Billion, never heard of those before, are they an older company renamed?

Re: Sagem N router ethernet speed

Good question. I've just looked it up on Wikipedia. It seems that they were re-branded back in 2004. Before then they were known as 'Billion Electric Co. Ltd'.

There are quite a few members who have variations of the Billion 78xx range. I have the Netgear DGND3700 myself. Take a look at the following thread if connection speed is also important:

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/askin...est-speed.html

As for the DGND3700, I have have some issues with the firmware and have been using various beta versions. The main issues for myself now are related to DLNA and the rear USB port. Otherwise I am really happy with the router now.

I also have a pair of 1Gbit 8-port TP-Link switches. One is full, the other isn't so full, but both are well used.

125 is a bit pricey, as i still do not know if even that will be powerful enough to stream my films, some say yes, some no. However, that's probably the router I will opt for, I have always liked Netgear.

Re: Sagem N router ethernet speed

      No problem.

I frequently stream HD content over my LAN to my TV or HT. I also stream AVI files from either the external drive attached to the router or the NAS drive, via my Laptop (on WiFi) back to the TV. The software i have won't stream MKV files via my laptop to the TV.

I haven't ever had any dropout issues steaming the content though.

Streaming videos doesn't really push the connection that hard though. It is possible to stream a BBC iPlayer HD programme on a 5mb Internet connection. It would become more of an issue if you were streaming video content to multiple devices simultaneously though.

It is mostly the increased WiFi connection that benefits from the setup I have. The USB port on the router is a little slow over the LAN, and others on the Netgear forum have mentioned this too.

Transferring large files is lovely. It takes seconds to copy a 40 min AVI file from my torrent PC to the NAS drive and around a minute or so for a 720p programme.

For me one extra issue with the DGND3700 is the WAN Ethernet port. Whilst I had issues trying to connect it to a VM Cable connection over the Christmas period, it has been confirmed that the DGND3700 does connect to BT Infinity. I am hoping that this will be the case with Sky's Fibre Broadband.

With the current firmware, the full cable connection isn't supported. Most purchasers have an ADSL connection and the WNDR3700 is similar in specs, but a full cable router.

Re: Sagem N router ethernet speed

highest speed I ever get in my area is 7mb my exchange is not due to be upgraded for ages either, they keep putting us back.

I do not really need a fast wireless speed, both of my pc's use wired, and the playstation/xbox and the tv too. Maybe I would be better with a more wired dedicated router/modem (with some wireless capability for phone and future)

guess I would need cat 6 cable and new network cards for a gigabyte connection too
